It's a no-brainer.
What tax-cutting government is going to featherbed proprietary standards
unless their mates can fund them politically, and also subsidise the
disadvantage they suffer vis-a-vis free open standards? That's yet another
drain on their already exhausted resources. At some point they will simply
run out of steam, as night follows day.
