Microsoft Continues to Waste Shareholder Value on Standards
,----[ Quote ]
| But Microsoft (MSFT) continues to waste shareholder value on standards too,
| trying to placate Brussels. It’s a bunch of European academics trying to
| dictate that the little thing that turns on the automatic windshield washer
| in your car always be on the left hand side of the steering column… from the
| same people who cannot agree on where the steering column should be in the
| cabin. Or what side of the road to drive on.

"Waste money on standards". That's the guy (Dennis Byron) who attacked me...
pretending to understand open source.
"Waste time brushing teeth... or washing up"? Standards made the Web, the
computer, everything... it's the most basic thing, which Microsoft ruined to
slow down advancement in computing.
Open Source Contribution Standard

| Well why not? I was thinking about the Contribution Pack and it got me
| thinking further, would there be any benefit to having a standard similar to
| iso9000, only must less rigid and feature rich. Why not setup a small
| organisation that looks at the documentation available to volunteers or
| communities and awards the open source project a compliance standard. What
| does it mean for the project? Well it means that people who want to
| contribute should be able to expect the same level of documentation on
| procedures that they get from another approved project.

| If we are to believe Wikipedia, the online collaborative encyclopaedia,
| open standards are publicly available and implementable standards.
| By allowing anyone to obtain and use a standard, the latter can
| increase compatibility between various hardware and software components.
|
| What this brand new coalition is after, is to halt the growing trend
| towards the privatisation of technology. It wants to get back to
| the open nature of technology and innovation and ensure that the
| multiplication of proprietary extensions are put aside to the benefit
| of compatible ones.

File formats: approaching the freedom crossroad
,----[ Quote ]
| What's important to note here is that the nature of words had not
| changed; what had changed was that Microsoft had decided that you couldn't
| read your own information any more. Microsoft are not the only company to
| do something like this--Autodesk is another. People might say that this
| is not such a big deal, but I would beg to differ. You or I created the
| information contained in these files but someone else is then deciding
| if we can freely access it.
|
| When you use free software like OpenOffice.org or Koffice the file format
| is always available to examine. This means that your information will
| always be available, regardless of the software version used.
