InternetNZ supports Vint Cerf’s rejection of OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| InternetNZ (the Internet Society of New Zealand Inc) strongly supports calls
| from Internet pioneer Vint Cerf opposing Microsoft’s proposed OOXML (Office
| Open XML) document standard.
|
| [...]
|
| Vint Cerf, widely regarded as the “father of the Internet”, was recently
| quoted, “If OOXML is adopted, it leads to a problem of duplicate formats for
| document exchange. That duplication is bad for interoperability. In the
| Internet world standards-makers work hard on agreeing one way to do things,
| and then evolving it - We don’t reinvent the wheel”.
|
| InternetNZ fully supports Cerf’s assertion, and is also concerned about the
| technical quality of Microsoft’s OOXML standard.

Red Hat Opposes OOXML

,----[ Quote ]
| As the March 29th voting deadline on OOXML approaches, Red Hat has announced
| its support of Open Document Format (ODF) instead of Office Open XML (OOXML).
|
| [...]
|
| Regardless of the complexity of the specifications, it is thought that OOXML
| is not currently defined enough to be fully implementable by those without
| access to inside information. ECMA, for example, acknowledges that additional
| information is necessary for compatibility with legacy application settings,
| and promises that the information will be made available. While it’s helpful
| to acknowledge the limitations of OOXML, we think it is unfair to ask the
| nation bodies, as members of ISO, to approve an incomplete standard. Given
| the lack of interoperability and inadequate review, Red Hat is asking members
| of ISO to vote “No” to OOXML this month.

Oracle: Unresolved Technical Concerns In DIS 29500 (OOXML)

,----[ Quote ]
| There are a number of fairly large scope changes that are the result of
| proposed changes from Ecma. Worse yet, the actual changes will not be known
| until some time after the BRM (when the editor releases the final draft), and
| will not be available for in time for national bodies before they must make a
| final decision on the specification.

More Irregularities in the OOXML ISO Process Surface

,----[ Quote ]
| If you read about what happened there in that article, "OOXML in Norway: The
| haywire process," your jaw will simply drop. I do think there is something
| the matter with the ISO process if this is how it works.

OOXML in Norway: The haywire process

| I believe that anything that sanctions unfair competition is bad. I believe

What Happened in Germany [on OOXML]

,----[ Quote ]
| It looks like Germany is the new Portugal, actually. You do remember how in
| Portugal IBM and Sun were not allowed in the room because it was
| allegedly "too small" despite having empty chairs? Well, in Germany, Google
| and Deutsche Telekom were allowed in the room but were not allowed to vote,
| heise says.

IBM is still locked out of the Portuguese OOXML meeting

,----[ Quote ]
| In spite of various communications, we [IBM] are still locked out and will
| not be allowed to participate. Microsoft will be there, as well as a special
| Microsoft guest, as will various Microsoft business partners, and others.
