Yahoo and Take-Two play hard to get

,----[ Quote ]
| But the hard-to-get strategy works best when the target has other wooers in
| the wings, and both companies have so far failed to find suitors to rescue
| them from the evil clutches of hostile bidders.

Turmoil and Hope at AOL

,----[ Quote ]
| AOL may be the last thin hope for Yahoo as it scrambles to come up with an
| alternative to being swallowed by Microsoft. Jeff Bewkes, the new chief
| executive of AOL's parent, Time Warner, has now buoyed those hopes, telling a
| Bear Stearns media conference on Tuesday that he would consider a combination
| of AOL with another company. "Whatever configuration makes it the strongest
| and most valuable," he said.

Disney CEO: Won't Bid for AOL

,----[ Quote ]
| Walt Disney Co. CEO Robert Iger detailed several ways on Wednesday that
| Disney hopes to benefit from high-tech -- but one of them isn't buying AOL,
| which many expect to be for sale soon.

If Microsoft eventually managed to weaken Yahoo, it would have to face
anti-competition laws in several nations (EU and China would oppose this). If
it managed to buy Yahoo, it would be in deep debt.

Microsoft to Authorize Proxy Fight at Yahoo

,----[ Quote ]
| In an escalation of its fight for Yahoo, Microsoft will authorize a proxy
| fight at the Internet company this week, people briefed on the matter told
| DealBook. Unless Yahoo quickly reverses course and enters into talks,
| Microsoft would then seek to nominate a slate of directors to Yahoo’s board
| by March 13, the final deadline for nominations, and pursue a lengthy
| campaign to oust the board.

Options Before Microsoft: Upping Bid; Tender Offer; Hostile Takeover; Pressure
Tactics

,----[ Quote ]
| Hostile board overthrow: This would be the most contentious, and Microsoft
| has indicated its willingness to go through with this if need be: it could
| seek to oust Yahoo's board at its next election; it would have until March 13
| to nominate a new slate of directors. Yahoo has taken "poison pill"
| provisions, and Microsoft have to oust the board to get past these
| provisions.

Dueling Fools: Microsoft Bear

,----[ Quote ]
| You don't need to watch the 'I'm a Mac, I'm a PC' commercials to see that
| Microsoft is taking a beating. You see it in the company's financials where
| its online unit, incredibly, is operating at a loss; overheating Xbox 360
| consoles find the company taking a huge warranty hit for a system losing
| market share to the Wii; and the upgrade wave of its flagship operating
| system has been more of a ripple than a tsunami. That last point is
| important. This was supposed to be Microsoft's final feast, the major last
| hurrah for its Windows Vista operating entry and its Office 2007 suite of
| applications before the inevitable embrace of cheaper open source operating
| systems and Web-based apps... In fact, even Microsoft will tell you that its
| fortunes peaked several months ago.

Is Microsoft All Bark and No Bite Anymore?

| I'm telling you: Microsoft-Yahoo ain't happening. And for those of you who
| say I never admit when I'm wrong: be sure to bring this post up if
| Microsoft-Yahoo ever does happen.

Will Microsoft Survive the Next 10 Years?

,----[ Quote ]
| I am not really an expert in this but when I read all the negative
| headlines and articles I ask myself if Microsoft really will survive
| the next 10 years.
|
| [...]
|
| I am pretty sure that the Open Source Community, the new Ubuntu,
| Google and of course Apple are those companies that are ready for
| our century and they will get more and more people that know what
| they really want.

P. Graham: Microsoft is Dead

,----[ Quote ]
| A few days ago I suddenly realized Microsoft was dead. I was talking
| to a young startup founder about how Google was different from Yahoo.
| I said that Yahoo had been warped from the start by their fear of
| Microsoft. That was why they'd positioned themselves as a "media
| company" instead of a technology company. Then I looked at his face
| and realized he didn't understand. It was as if I'd told him how much
| girls liked Barry Manilow in the mid 80s. Barry who?
|
| Microsoft? He didn't say anything, but I could tell he didn't quite
| believe anyone would be frightened of them.
