Linux Live CDs: A Convenient Approach to Personal Computing

,----[ Quote ]
| The choice of an operating system often results from the perceived ease with
| which these tasks can be accomplished. I would like to focus on Linux Live
| CDs as a way for an individual computer user to simplify computing. Live CDs
| started out as a marketing tool for different Linux “distributions” (or
| distro). A distribution in simple terms is a customized version of Linux. It
| is created by compiling and packaging software components geared towards a
| certain type of usage. All Linux varieties we see are certain distributions
| developed by a group of people or companies. They can choose the distribution
| to be commercial or free, general purpose or highly specialized.

All About Linux 2008: Linux distros I’ve loved before

,----[ Quote ]
| Starting to run Linux is like knowing owning a pick-up truck: you basically
| can do more stuff. Need a website? Boom. Need an easy desktop? Bang. Need a
| hug? Tux! Going through all these distros — and I’m sure my experience is
| very limited compared to some of yours.

| Banking isn't the be-all and end-all: there's many other reasons you'd
| want a secure system, separate from what's on the hard disk, besides
| Internet banking. Traveller's can't necessarily trust the integrity of
| a computer in an Internet cafe.

Top 10 Linux FUD Patterns, Part 2

,----[ Quote ]
| Nothing, however, beats seeing it in action! Remember what I said about first
| impressions? Live CDs are very useful weapons against FUD. They allow
| potential users to test drive the OS, to try before “buying”. This helps
| prove to some that Linux has come a long way in terms of automatic hardware
| detection and other features that make it user friendly. It’s also much
| easier than going to the extent of configuring a dual-boot system. The
| downside is, they can be a bit slow under certain conditions. If a friend has
| a Linux system already installed, it may be better to try that out instead.
