Windows XP may get another reprieve

,----[ Quote ]
| To compete against Linux, Microsoft needs full Windows XP on these devices.
| There are more and more devices like the Eee PC cropping up and they are
| finding interested buyers, not just in emerging markets, but in mature
| markets where people are willing to trade a few features for getting a
| low-cost, light machine that allows full Web browsing on the go.
|
| Publicly the company is still sticking to the revised June deadline, but
| Microsoft has shown a willingness to make changes in the past.

How long can Microsoft rely on XP? GNU/Linux is evolving quickly. Mighty KDE
4.1 is only months away.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Windows XP: Going, going ... gone?

,----[ Quote ]
| The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a
| surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the
| fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of
| a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around,
| the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final
| passing of Windows 2000.

| Dell today revealed that it will restore the option to use Windows XP on
| some of its home systems, marking a potentially damaging blow to
| Microsoft's hopes for the newer Windows Vista.

|
| While a popular request through the company's IdeaStorm website, the
| choice was substantially outnumbered by requests for pre-installed
| Linux, US-based technical support, and other features -- pointing to a
| larger general demand for the change. The turnaround may be a reflection of
| an overall backlash against Vista, observed IDC analyst Richard Shim.

Acer: PC industry 'disappointed' with Vista

| Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer to
| openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in the
| Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
