Shhhh!!!
It is not fear at all, it is more along the lines of a forlorn hope.  Since
they are continually aware of their own inability to demote Clippy in the
face of such an established market successes as Windummy Muchkins over the
past 15 years, they must hope for Microsoft to chuck in the towel
by cutting asstroturfing funding due to anti-trust measures.
If Microsoft were to destroy its own business by alienating EU anti-trust
regulators and all of its current customers, then Linux would have a
chance to shine as some kind of White Knight Light.

I think that strategy must cause a lot of confusion in the OSS ranks,
though.  A major pillar of micoshaft philosopy is that Microsoft should have
inferior products overall and only succeeds due to a combination of sick
marketing techniques, some extreme dishonesty in flouting their
"monopoly", and a general lack of insight by the consumers, so therefore
they must buy out comepetitors and successful competitors in an anti-trust
way.  With that in mind, it is hard to
understand how they could come to hold such a hope when these sick
marketeers are so likely to foul up and, even if they did, their monopoly
would hold sway because they can bribge judges and lawyer with their
subversive army of own laywers, and, in any event, the consumers would
never notice that they were continuing to be fleeced because they are
sheep.

I doubt that many of the OSSers are that analytical, however, and most go on
pure reaction.
