[News] GNU/Linux Runs More Quickly on the New Eee PC

Americans Snagging the ASUS Eee PC 900. Where is Ours?!

,----[ Quote ]
| Abramson described the system as a lot sleeker than his original 4G. The
| screen is a huge improvement; he is much happier with the sizing of Web pages
| in the built-in browser. He even claims the system, running Xandros Linux, is
| performing faster.

Linux vs. Windows Metrics -- Nothing Is Quite What It Seems To Be

,----[ Quote ]
| What usually makes Linux painful or impossible for the average Joe or Jane
| user is the task of installation and configuration. Asus took away that pain
| by offering a very attractive little box at a good price with an easy to use,
| ready to go Linux installation. Now the trick is getting Joe or Jane user to
| seriously consider that the Xandros Linux version, if they did their own cost
| vs. benefit analysis, really is the better choice and not just because it
| boots up faster.

Asustek to Share Eee PC at Taiwan Open Source Summit

,----[ Quote ]
| So far, Asustek said it has sold a million of the low-cost laptops, but it
| declined to break down the number of Linux versions sold versus the number of
| Eee PCs sold with Microsoft Windows XP.
|
| The Linux OS has allowed the company to keep prices down on the laptops in
| two ways. First, open-source software comes at little or no cost, and second
| because the streamlined OS requires a bare minimum of hardware to run. It's
| been the same story as for the One Laptop Per Child Foundation (OLPC), which
| also uses a Linux OS in its XO laptop.

2007's most important IT lesson is spelled with an Eee

,----[ Qote ]
| The Eee shows too just how out of date the 'is Linux ready for the desktop?'
| argument is. Yes it is. Anyone can pick up an Eee with its standard Linux
| distro - or with a number of freely available alternatives - and just use it.
| That alone revitalises the 'is this paid-for operating system value for
| money?' question.

Microsoft can't even give it away

| To sweeten the pill, there is also a considerable price incentive in buying a
| basic portable with GNU/Linux installed as opposed to one with Windows XP,
| which not only costs about 30 per cent more, but also has the nerve to
| require more storage space and memory.
| Firefox.
