Stuart Cohen: Meet the Man Behind the Collaborative Software Initiative

,----[ Quote ]
| Whether it’s been Linux, Apache, Firefox, whatever it might be, they’re
| seeing great benefits from open source software. I think that, as IT budgets
| get squeezed and dollars get squeezed, people are looking for more and more
| cost savings, but they still want high quality code, they want high quality
| support, the collaborative model, the community model is great for that. I
| think it only helps.

The open-source industry is worth $60 billion

,----[ Quote ]
| John Powell, CEO of Alfresco, has declared that the open-source industry is
| worth $60 billion, not necessarily because of its vendors' collective
| revenue, but rather because of the value of the cost savings for customers.

Open source: 'World's largest software company'

Accurate market share statistics and The $60 Billion dollar question

,----[ Quote ]
| One of our Editors, Carla Schroder mentioned that the headline could just as
| easily be "Consumers and businesses save $60 billion, and have money to spend
| on useful things, instead of predatory overpriced software licenses" and a
| reader wrote it could be titled "Innovative corporations have saved over $60B
| by switching to Open Source". Because if we're going to spin it, we might as
| well spin it our way right? Who's to say that the huge markup in sales price
| by Microsoft hasn't resulted in many of Microsoft's customers having to get
| by posting smaller than usual profits. Wouldn't that cost the IT industry
| money? A ton of money is my bet.
