Developing world buoys up software pirates

,----[ Quote ]
| China scored the highest counterfeit software figure with an eye-popping 82
| per cent, Russia notched up 73 per cent, India 69 per cent and Brazil 59 per
| cent. The US still suffered the greatest loss from software piracy, despite
| the fact that it recorded the lowest rate.

They use propaganda words, but it's good news for Linux. People are not willing
to pay for proprietary software. GNU/Linux forces Microsoft not to crack down
on copyrights infingements of its shoddy Orwelian software. Bad news for the
media moguls also:

RIAA ordered to shell out $100k for P2P witch hunt

| Fortunately for Andersen's financial future, judge John Acosta has ruled that
| the RIAA will pick up the tab for its unsuccessful lawsuit against her. All
| totaled, Andersen's counsel have been ordered to receive $107,833 (£55,395)
| for their work.

This dilemma is similar to Microsoft's. Pressure people, lose business.

Microsoft Happy with the Evolution of Windows Vista Piracy

,----[ Quote ]
| But the truth is that Microsoft is happy with the way Windows Vista
| piracy is evolving. Is there a catch to this? No. The fact of the
| matter is that Windows Vista has delivered a heavy blow to
| software counterfeiters. The reason for this is the new Windows
| Genuine Advantage security mechanism integrated into the
| operating system.
|
| You may not notice this on the surface. On the surface, the
| Internet is crawling with Windows Vista cracks, hacks and
| workarounds. On the surface, every Windows Vista edition has
| been cracked and is available for download via peer-to-peer
| networks. But this is not the true extent of Windows Vista piracy.

Microsoft seals its Windows and opens the door to Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Now comes the really interesting question. With Vista's activation
| technology, Microsoft has the power to stamp out piracy everywhere. But
| will it choose to do so everywhere? After all, if folks in China or
| Thailand or Ethiopia have to pay for Vista, they won't be able to run
| it because they won't be able to afford the licence fee. In which case
| they may finally wake up to the attractions of free software such as
| Linux - and it's easy to imagine what that will do to Microsoft's
| plans for world domination.
|
| It's a delicious prospect: Microsoft impaling itself on the horns
| of a dilemma it has created for itself. Roll on Thursday.

Brit violinist does a Radiohead

,----[ Quote ]
| Ms Little, 42, is giving the whole thing, entitled The Naked Violin, away
| absolutely free - thereby allowing music buffs to avoid the terrible dilemma
| posed by the In Rainbows "pay-what-you-fancy" net launch: to not pay anything
| for the album and not give a tinker's cuss; or to not pay anything and feel
| mildly guilty for about ten minutes.

Big labels are f*cked, and DRM is dead - Peter Jenner

,----[ Quote ]
| Few people know the music industry better than Peter Jenner. Pink
| Floyd's first manager, who subsequently managed Syd Barrett's solo
| career, Jenner has also looked after T.Rex, The Clash, Ian Dury,
| Disposable Heroes and Billy Bragg - who he manages today. He's also
| secretary general of the International Music Managers Forum.
