Exceptional Linux programs for Kids
,----[ Quote ]
| There’s nothing worse than hearing how an entire school district is switching
| operating systems from Mac to Windows (or vice versa) because that’s what
| the “business” world relies on or some other blather. The costs associated
| with the transition are enormous and the whole ‘to do’ is unnecessary,
| because features on applications mimic one another. Additionally, it seems
| one option is Linux, which is open source and free.

ClamWin Free Antivirus review
,----[ Quote ]
| Turn to ClamWin Free Antivirus, an oddly named program that adheres to the
| Gnu open-source model. It won't charge you anything for virus protection -
| not now, not a year from now.
|
| [...]
|
| Verdict
|
| ClamWin Free Antivirus is a solid free antivirus program. We wouldn't
| recommend that it is your sole method of protection, but it is well worth
| having as an extra level of security.

Ask Technocrat: What Linux Distro for a Seven Year-Old?
,----[ Quote ]
| He's a bright kid so I don't think he'll have any problems with any of the
| major distributions; however, one hurdle is that he will not have Internet
| access from his computer. Therefore, I need to find a distribution that comes
| with a lot of software and is not dependent on net access.

Linux Is for Kids
,----[ Quote ]
| My brother doesn’t know that I’m installing OpenSuSE 10.3 on his daughters’
| PC. I honestly don’t think he will mind once he sees all of the cool
| applications and games on it. Hell, he’ll probably want to use it himself.
| I’ll tell the girls not to let him use it, because it’s the kids’ computer,
| not for adults.

Ubuntu Sharing on a Saturday Morning!

| The Beauty of it lies where there are no preconceptions or judgement
| passed on Ubuntu. she just uses it. there is no comparing... or
| complaining about not having support. She is only 5 and she can
| use linux... in fact my wife has failed to find an alternative on
| other operating systems that can attract my daughter.

I've just met Santa Claus.

| His name is Ken Starks and many only know him as "helios". Ken has a popular
| blog and a cause he has given much for. As a Linux advocate, Ken has not only
| spread the word across the nation and the world about Linux, he has taken on
| the task of giving poor kids computers. He calls it by the corny name of
| Komputers4Kids but it doesn't matter how corny the name sounds, it is what he
| does that makes the difference. Ken has made a difference in the lives of
| over a hundred kids in the past year.

| The same kids who were puzzled by Windows XP picked Kiddix up right away.

| if they outgrow the simple interface of Kiddix.

Edubuntu - A real life experiment - Linux and a 9 year old

| With a Dell Celeron, 256MB Ram and basic integrated graphics, Dawn and
| I struggled with what to do for Andy'y computer. After deciding Vista
| was not an option, and that it just wasn't a good investment to throw
| $100 worth of ram into a $250 computer, we decided to look to Linux.
| Dawn and I have both been playing with Linux quite a bit lately, so
| we felt comfortable giving it a go.

You silly rabbit Linux is for kids

| If you own an older computer (Pentium 2 or newer) and have a few

| so that they can play educational games and do their school work.
| Now you can finally have your computer back.

Mandriva One Not the Linux Dinosaur of Old
,----[ Overview ]
| I found early versions of Linux weren't very user-friendly, so this
| time around, I used my 7-year-old son as my test subject. I gave him a
| little lesson on how to use Mandriva One and off he went. On his own, he
| was able to boot up the machine and get himself online to his favorite
| kid Web sites without any problems at all -- meaning today's Linux has
| a short learning curve.

Doin' it for the Noob...
,----[ Quote ]
| As much as I sincerely dislike the term "noob", I will use it here. Not in a
| derogatory fashion but just as an attention-getter in the title. Besides,
| there are so many rhyming possibilities.
|
| Here is what I want to do. I am going to present "The Noobie Desktop". This
| is, with room for generous variation, the basic desktop I present our new
| Linux Users upon initial install and during our Linux Labs. Let's take a few
| minutes and kick the tires, slam the doors...even take it for a spin. Then we
| can get to the real value of my blog.
