Novell financials beat estimates again

,----[ Quote ]
| The company said it showed healthy growth in its core business units around
| the Linux operating system, identity/access management software and systems
| management tools.

They cannibalise their legacy stuff, but it makes Linux more prevalent. They
claim a sharp rise (about 31%) in Linux sales.

And here's a Ballnux laptop (new review):

Not so Eee-sy

| In the UK, HP offers the Mini Note 2133 with the choice of Linux, in the form
| of Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.1, or Windows Vista Business. Both
| the SKUs have the same core specification, but the Windows Vista version adds
| a 6-cell battery and makes up for Microsoft's licensing costs with a £50
| price hike.

Red Hat's (and Sun's) missed SUSE opportunity

| Chew on that last one for a bit. Way back in 2002/2003, Sun might have been
| in the Linux business, while Novell might have kept fiddling with NetWare
| (but more likely would have gone actively into the open-source applications
| realm, following on its acquisition of Ximian). We would have been living in
| a very different open-source industry if things had gone Sun's way back then.
|
| Better? Worse? I don't know. But different.
