IBM Ditches i and AIX in U.S. Open Systems for Linux
,----[ Quote ]
| There was a time when IBM took a lot of pride in supporting the IT needs of
| big sporting events like the Olympic Games and the U.S. Open, and it also
| used to try to showcase all of its key information systems as part of the
| overall solutions. IBM walked away from the Olympics IT sponsorship after the
| Barcelona games, but it still hosts the infrastructure for the U.S. Open
| tennis competition. The one big change at this year's tennis tournament is
| that IBM is not only consolidating servers, but has ported all the
| applications, which do scoring and provide Web applications, to Linux.

Of Kids and Linux
,----[ Quote ]
| It's a good time to be bringing it up, because IBM has announced a stronger
| push for Linux PCs.
|
| Now, certainly, I'm not one of those prophets who go around predicting "the
| year of Linux on the desktop". There is no such animal. That isn't how open
| source grows. Open source grows slowly, a step at a time. But inevitably.
| Once a person has seen Linux for themselves, they are cured forever of the
| FUD spread about it. One by one, household by household. And most certainly
| generation by generation.

IBM To Linux Desktop Developers: 'Stop Copying Windows'
,----[ Quote ]
| Bob Sutor, VP of open source and standards at IBM, told attendees of the
| LinuxWorld Conference in San Francisco, that what the open source community
| needs to make Linux popular as a desktop OS used by consumers and businesses
| are "some really good graphic designers."
|
| "Stop copying 2001 Windows. That's not where the usability action is," Sutor
| said during his afternoon keynote.
|
| Sutor's comments came a day after IBM announced at the show that it was
| joining Linux distributors Canonical, Novell, and Red Hat in building
| Microsoft-free PCs for business. The four companies agreed to provide
| hardware partners with the software to build desktops that would have
| alternatives to Windows and Office.

Virtually Speaking: IBM Goes High on Linux
,----[ Quote ]
| None of this is terribly surprising. Today, for many enterprises, Linux is
| just another operating system choice. In a clear case of
| be-careful-what-you-wish-for, it is as viable an option as some of the Unix
| heavyweights or Microsoft Windows, depending on the situation.
|
| The other wrench is the possibility that virtualization's gain is the
| operating system's loss, although given the hypervisor's potentially
| commodity status, it's gain may well be negligible.

Linux still super in Top500
,----[ Quote ]
| In the June 2008 Top500 list, Linux still lives large with a role in 92% of
| systems (It is the only OS for 85.4%, but when considering all distributions
| (SUSE, Red Hat, CentOS, and general ‘Linux,’ as well as mixed uses that
| include Linux, I figure the share is more like the 92%).
