Kernel Log: The second day of Kernel Summit 2008; criticism of Ubuntu at the
opening of the Linux Plumbers Conference

,----[ Quote ]
| Following the release on Tuesday of details about debates and decisions at
| this year's Kernel Summit, LWN.net has now reported on the second and final
| day of the conference. Linus Torvalds, Andrew Morton, and some 80 other
| important and nearly all male kernel developers discussed their approaches to
| the further development of Linux and exchanged experiences. Like the LWN.net
| articles covering the first day, Jonathan Corbet's reports on the second day
| of the kernel Summit are available exclusively to LWN.net subscribers until
| the 25th of September. As has been the case in previous years, other sources
| of information on the summit are scarce – it often takes weeks or months for
| additional information on decisions reached at the conference to trickle out
| on blogs or posts on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML).

Webcams on Linux a hit

,----[ Quote ]
| A few weeks back I thought I’d give the video aspect of Skype a go, so pulled
| out a Creative NX Pro webcam and put it in place. I already had Skype open,
| plugged in this USB camera and didn’t have to do any setup at all - I opened
| the options panel and it was already selected as the default webcam device.
| It “just worked”, as Ubuntu would make us believe is the case for everything.
|
| My Dad on the other hand wasn’t so lucky on his Windows XP machine. He had
| lost the installation CD, so had to hunt around the web to get the right
| drivers and of course, post-installation was told he should restart his
| machine. A lot of this contrast is due to one man writing pretty much every
| webcam driver in the world for Linux.

Webcams that just work with Ubuntu Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| The GNOME Foundation Board asked me to buy a webcam for the GNOME Events Box,
| so we could show Cheese on our stands. This could be cool together with the
| box’s new projector. I also wanted a webcam for my own use so Liam’s
| grandparents can see him in motion more often. So this was an opportunity to
| discover if any two available webcams really “just work” with Ubuntu, after
| doing some research and guessing. The results were great.

One man writes Linux drivers for 352 USB webcams

| A lone hobbyist programmer sitting at his home in France is responsible
| for adding 352 USB webcams to the list of those supported by Linux. He
| tells the INQUIRER about this often unknown and unrecognised achievement.
