Apple's latest DRM will restrict your wardrobe

,----[ Quote ]
| You've heard, of course, of digital rights management - used to control how
| you play, copy or otherwise use media files like music.
|
| Now Apple wants to apply that concept to your sporting wardrobe. In US patent
| application 2008/0218310, the company details a way to stop us using
| unauthorised training shoes with the in-sole sensors it sells as part of the
| Nike + iPod kit. The shoe sensors work as pedometers, sending the data to
| your iPod as you run.

Moving from Mac to Ubuntu: Why I’m switching

,----[ Quote ]
| Why I’m leaving Mac
|
|    1. Crap file management. The Finder doesn’t work for me. No location bar
|    and no tree strucure side panel makes it difficult to navigate folders and
|    move files around the way I want to.
|    2. Insufficient panels & customization. In Ubuntu I can have as many
|    panels I want, can put all kinds of stuff on them, and can arrange them
|    however I want. In OSX You just have the dock, and you can really only put
|    applications or files on them, and you can’t even put in a separator to
|    keep them organized.
|    3. Various other annoyances. Such as:
|           * program menus are glued to the top of the screen on one monitor
|           only, which detaches them from the window. This is especailly
|           annoying when the program you’re using is on the second monitor.
|           * the date/time doesn’t open to a navigable calendar. I often use
|           this to check dates in the past or future.
|           * you can’t see hidden files unless you run a command from the
|           terminal to turn them on. Thus, hidden files are either always on
|           or always off.

Ask Apple about the iPhone

,----[ Quote ]
| Services like Amazon, eMusic, Napster, Rhapsody, Play.com and 7digital are
| all selling music without DRM. A typical response to this might be that Apple
| has no option to sell media without DRM, but this is simply untrue. Jobs is
| the largest individual shareholder at Disney, and he could insist that its
| films be DRM-free. Apple should be leading the way to promote DRM-free music,
| but instead is lagging behind. What is Apple doing to fix this? If it really
| is the RIAA's fault, can you tell me specifically what the RIAA said to Jobs
| when he asked for the ability to sell DRM-free music?

A Linux User's Perspective on the ITunes Store (and DRM in General)

,----[ Quote ]
| What if tomorrow you went to Best Buy or Walmart or Sam Goody and purchased a
| CD? What if, before you left the store, the salesman told you that although
| the CD was in all other respects a standard CD, that you could only play it
| if you owned a Pioneer or Sony stereo? Would that make any sense? Would it
| make you a bit hesitant about buying music from that store again?
|
| Well, if you purchase music or videos from the iTunes Store,
|
| [...]
|
| With content from the iTunes Store, however, users may find themselves a bit
| stuck if they ever want to make the switch to a more open computing platform,
| such as Linux. Because none of the DRM-restricted content from the iTunes
| Store will play on Linux. And it's all because that's how Apple wants it, to
| be honest, and not because of any technical limitation.

Apple's latest trick to enforce digital rights

| With this version of iTunes, users were finding that music
| subjected to the old download-burn-rip would no longer
