Linux Promotion in Mall Kiosks
,----[ Quote ]
| In my experience, the mall kiosk is a great marketplace where potential
| customers can stop by to make a new discovery with a product that could very
| well change the way they look at computers forever.
|
| Considering the financial savings on software, the fact that the user ends up
| with a PC free from malware –and the entire package is less in cost than a
| comparable Mac – pre-installed Linux boxes might very well sell themselves.
|
| But not without fully understanding the mindset of the typical mall customer.
| The likely kiosk customer is generally:
|
| • At the mall to make a purchase, potentially in a buying mood.
|
| • Likely using Windows, possibly open to exploring OS alternatives.
|
| • Open to being impressed with overall value, not clever marketing gimmicks.

You're not trapped!
,----[ Quote ]
| Usually, when I suggest they switch to Linux, I get resistance. This is due
| largely to their fear of change. My message to them is simply that they are
| not trapped by Windows.
|
| The beauty of Linux is that it can be deployed on their existing hardware,
| which is not the case, if they want to switch to a Mac. When deployed on
| their existing hardware, Linux usually runs more efficiently than Windows.
| Once deployed, it will be much more secure than a Windows or even a Mac
| machine. They won't have to buy anti-virus or spyware programs.

That's one reason why Apple can't beat Microsoft where GNU/Linux already does
(e.g. Brazil). There's no Apple shop or sufficiently-large budget.

|
| Yeah? Well maybe it's not and maybe that's the problem. It doesn't seem to be
| anyone's "job" to advertise Linux. Sure you use it and most assuredly you
| dump buckets of money into development and research, but in the final
| analysis, companies like IBM and HP don't see any significant financial gain
| from the desktop...it's a tool for them to achieve the profit they make from
| the server side.
