[News] New Release Candidate of Linux 2008.9/10, New Debugger

Linux 2.6.27-rc6

| Same old deal - except it's been almost two weeks since -rc5. That said,
| the diff is actually about the same size, so I guess that means things are
| calming down. Most of the diff (bulk-wise) is updates to the new gspca
| (standard USB webcam) driver, although some of it is also removal of the
| dead miropcm20* driver.

| The devices are designed for up to 208 MHz system clock and are based on an
| ARM9EJ-S core with Embedded Trace Module (ETM) and integrated Vector Floating
| Point coprocessor. Moreover, depending on the derivative, up to 256 Kbytes of
| SRAM, an external Flash interface and various peripheral functions such as
| 10/100 Mbit Ethernet, USB controller including host capability and 24-bit LCD
| controller for STN and TFT panels are available to the user.

Recent:

Linux is a platform, not an OS

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft, a staunch opponent of Linux, already understands this very
| vividly.   They no longer see Windows as just an "operating system", but as
| an entire platform.  They realize that the only way Windows has a prayer of
| surviving, especially in today's open source world, is if everything runs on
| Windows, including every FOSS program out there.  They've even admitted that
| as much themselves, saying that they think that all open source should run on
| Windows.
|
| And Apple is no different, nor Sun, nor IBM.  They see their respective
| operating systems as platforms, not OS's.  Sure, IBM supports Linux, but they
| also support IBM Unix, and in both cases they see their respective operating
| systems as platforms onto which they place lots of other software.  So
| ultimately one of the biggest failings of Linux marketing is that people are
| working too hard to sell the operating system side of it, but failing to sell
| the platform aspects of it.
