Intel is working on a dual-core "Atom"right now, but what do these
labels/brands really mean? It's not just an issue of energy consumption. The
manufacturing costs are almost the same (was about $29 per chip in 2006), so
they just artificially create 'tiers'... like "rich man's Intel" and "poor
man's Intel".
At the end of the day, it's margin erosing for both Microsoft (they sell
Windows for about $18) and Intel (dual-core for a coupla' hundreds). The big
issue for Wintel is that AMD is said to be entering this space (it was already
there with OLPC, which Intel attacked) and ARM too will soon have an
announcement. Interesting times ahead!
