[News] Linux Gains File System Cache

FS-Cache merged in Kernel 2.6.30

,----[ Quote ]
| FS-Cache has been merged into the upcoming kernel 2.6.30. This allows for a
| generic caching interface in the kernel for other file systems. For example,
| you can use local hard disks to cache data accessed via NFS, AFS, or CD-Rom.
| Since these tend to be high-latency while the disks are low latency, it
| should provide for a nice speedup.

Kernel Log: Development of 2.6.30 is under way

,----[ Quote ]
| Shortly after the release of Linux 2.6.29 last Tuesday, the kernel subsystem
| developers began to prepare the first changes to be merged into the main
| development branch for Linux 2.6.30. This is usually done by sending a "Git
| pull request" – an email which includes the URL to a Git tree with the
| proposed changes as well as a diffstat and a list of individual patches – not
| only to Linus Torvalds, but usually also to the LKML (Linux Kernel Mailing
| List). Often, the maintainer of the subsystem starts the email with a short
| summary of the proposed changes, highlighting the most important ones, or
| putting the changes into context.

Linux 2.6.29

,----[ Quote ]
| It's out there now, or at least in the process of getting mirrored out.
|
| The most obvious change is the (temporary) change of logo to Tuz, the
| Tasmanian Devil. But there's a number of driver updates and some m68k  header
| updates (fixing headers_install after the merge of non-MMU/MMU)  that end up
| being pretty noticeable in the diffs.
|
| The shortlog (from -rc8, obviously - the full logs from 2.6.28 are too big
| to even contemplate attaching here) is appended, and most of the non-logo
| changes really shouldn't be all that noticeable to most people. Nothing
| really exciting, although I admit to fleetingly considering another -rc
| series just because the changes are bigger than I would have wished for this
| late in the game. But there was little point in holding off the real release
| any longer, I feel.
