FlightGear Flight Simulator

,----[ Quote ]
| This past weekend, I was considering purchasing a flight simulator for my PC.
| While researching various options, I found a free, online simulator called
| FlightGear. It's an open source game, which means anyone who knows what
| they're doing can write and program for it. (An example of a closed source
| game would be Microsoft Flight Simulator, which has only the people hired by
| Microsoft developing the game.) There are hundreds of modern and historic
| airplanes and helicopters available and detailed scenery of the entire world.

Fictional Air Combat 0.1.3

| I recently discovered YAFS on SF.net: Fictional Air Combat, which is an
| action flight simulation at an early development stage.

Laminar Research Releases X-Plane 9

,----[ Quote ]
| While not exactly a game, Laminar Research has announced the release of
| X-Plane 9.0. X-Plane is a multi-platform (Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows)
| flight simulator, but unlike FlightGear and other open-source simulators,
| this is meant to be a life-like training exercise. X-Plane is so realistic
| that it has been certified by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) here
| in the United States for use as a training utility. X-Plane 9 has been in
| beta for some time, but X-Plane 9.00 has now officially been released.

FlightGear takes off

,----[ Quote ]
| FlightGear is a multiplatform, GPLed flight simulator. It is
| sophisticated, realistic, and extensible. You can choose to fly
| more than 100 different aircraft, ranging from a Sopwith Camel to a UFO,
| you can take off and land from thousands of airports, and you can fly over
| virtually any terrain in the world. After 10 years of development, it has
| suddenly become a very hot item. How hot? You may have seen it used
| recently on prime time TV and not realized it. It was used in an episode of
| Fox TV's legal drama Justice to prove pilot error in the fatal crash of a
| private plane.

GL Studio Puts Simulators On The Desktop

,----[ Quote ]
| DiSTI's GL Studio package lets the instructional designer integrate
| photo-realistic objects into their simulations that react just like the
| real parts. The parts influence the performance of the systems and can
| accurately behave according to the laws of nature. Unscrew an
| important connector from a simulated jet engine and it will stop
| running.
