Ubuntu 9.04 Boots in 21.4 Seconds
,----[ Quote ]
| There are only two days left until the third Alpha version of the upcoming
| Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) will be available
| (for testing), and... we couldn't resist the temptation to take the current
| daily build for a test drive, before our usual screenshot tour, and taste
| the "sweetness" of that evolutionary EXT4 Linux filesystem. Announced on
| Christmas Eve, the EXT4 filesystem is now declared stable and it is
| distributed with version 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel and later. However, the
| good news is that the EXT4 filesystem was implemented in the upcoming Ubuntu
| 9.04 Alpha 3 a couple of days ago and it will be available in the Ubuntu
| Installer, if you choose manual partitioning (see the screenshot below for
| details). The bad news is that EXT4 will not be the default filesystem for
| the Ubuntu OS until version 9.10, due for release in late October this year.

Ubuntu 8.10 upmc for the Asus EeePC? Don't bother, just install the full distro
,----[ Quote ]
| I discovered recently the truth of the old saying that necessity is the
| mother of invention. Yes, I finally did it. I bricked my beloved EeePc. I had
| just installed the Smart package manager and a subsequent reboot saw me stuck
| in, well, an eternal boot loop. Impulsive mixing of repositories always ends
| in tears—but not being able to boot? Argh! To rub salt into the wound I had
| mislaid the Xandros DVD to do a reinstall and I didn’t even have an external
| CD/DVD drive anyway. Organised or what? Well, I might not be organised but
| I’m a persistent little bugger and I was determined to either fix Xandros or
| replace it with something as good or better without shelling out for an
| external drive in the process. Ubuntu appeared to come to the rescue and not
| just any Ubuntu, but “the” Ubuntu specifically modified for ultra portable
| micro computers and MIDs—on a flash drive no less. Canonical seem to be
| taking netbooks seriously.

Ubuntu vs. That Other OS
,----[ Quote ]
| Both machines have the same exact specs, both have been used for the same
| time (to be fair I have tweaked the OS on the left quite a bit to optimize
| it). Ubuntu is already idle by the time the video ends; while the other PC
| takes 30 seconds more than what I’ve uploaded to idle the hard drive.

Mach Boot: The live CD that supposedly boots in 10 seconds

| Mach Boot won't replace Knoppix, and it won't replace Puppy, DSL or NimbleX

Phoenix HyperSpace: Quick-Boot Your Laptop
,----[ Quote ]
| Phoenix Technologies' new HyperSpace is an instant-on environment for
| laptops, letting users launch a browser or other apps with booting into the
| OS.
|
| Today, Phoenix Technologies introduced a firmware product called HyperSpace,
| which allows PCs to run a number of applications separate from the operating
| system. What that means is that if you use a PC equipped with HyperSpace, you
| will be able to quick-boot your notebook into a secure Linux environment,
| where you can use Web browsers like FireFox and pre-loaded Web-aware apps
| like Google Earth, Picasa, and the like.
|
| [...]
|
| Also, since HyperSpace is a Linux-based platform, Windows viruses won't
| affect it.
