[News] Having Lots of Choice in GNU/Linux is a Strength

Versatility is a good thing

,----[ Quote ]
| Ultimately, what all this boils down to is that there is no
| single "best" distro or DE in the Linux community that can
| or is capable of filling all the wide and varied needs of
| the multitude of environments and users out there.
|
| This is indeed the true strength of Linux and it's ability
| to be modified and customized. Having 300 plus distros and
| a variety of DE's isn't a negative thing. It demonstrates
| that Linux can be tightly integrated and implemented to
| uniquely if almost any given user base or work environment
| we come across.

Why did GNUstep never really take off?

,----[ Quote ]
| GNUstep and GNUstep-related packages are readily available
| for a variety of Linux distributions and the *BSD projects.
| So unlike in the past, it should be far easier for a
| typical user to get GNUstep, and GNUstep-based
| applications, installed and running on their systems. And
| we do see interesting work being built upon GNUstep.

The five best desktop Linuxes you haven't tried

,----[ Quote ]
| One of the pleasures of Linux is
| that you can try out different distributions
| to see which one works best for you.
| You like Ubuntu, but you want to fine
| tune the desktop engine? OK, try
| Kubuntu with its KDE desktop then.
| Some worthwhile distributions, however,
| don't get as much attention as they
| deserve. So, here's my list of five great
| distributions that you might want
| to try.

More distros = more choice

,----[ Quote ]
| With more than 300 active distributions
| (distros), Linux is on a roll. Linux
| distros primarily differ in terms of
| features since they are built on
| variants of the same kernel (32-bit/64-bit;
| with various features of the
| kernel enabled or disabled). “All the Linux
| distributions come from the same
| upstream kernel and what distinguishes each
| distribution is how they provide
| support, get ISVs to certify the ISV
| applications on the specific
| distribution, and how IHVs (Independent
| Hardware Vendor) get to do the same,”
| feels Nandu Pradhan, President & Managing
| Director, Red Hat India.
