Having used dual boot for the past decade, one thing is for
certain. All versions of Linux installed have not required
overwriting except for upgrade (with data remaining intact,
rather painless). However, the Windows versions have required
refreshing periodic refreshing (back up all data, wipe the
partition clean, reinstall, restore all data).
On the home system XP is mostly used for gaming. No new software
has been installed on it for the past 2 years, hence it has not
required refresh. We are still using the old games purchased
several years ago. (Yes, we are legal with the original media
and documentation, although I suppose if the SBA were to audit
us, we would come up short as we no longer have the original
receipts. IIRC, having original media is not considered as proof
of purchase and entitlement to a legal license.)
