The Linux Staging Tree, what it is and is not

,----[ Quote ]
| The Linux Staging tree (or just "staging" from now on) is used to hold
| stand-alone drivers and filesystems that are not ready to be merged into the
| main portion of the Linux kernel tree at this point in time for various
| technical reasons. It is contained within the main Linux kernel tree so that
| users can get access to the drivers much easier than before, and to provide a
| common place for the development to happen, resolving the "hundreds of
| different download sites" problem that most out-of-tree drivers have had in
| the past.

Kernel log: New graphics drivers and stable kernels; details about
Linux-staging

,----[ Quote ]
| Following the release of pre-release version seven a few days ago, the
| development of Linux 2.6.26 is now in its final stages; however, looking at
| the error list, various error reports on the LKML and some recent changes to
| the main development branch it is possible that there will be an eighth
| pre-release version. It is unlikely, however, that the next Linux version
| released by Linus Torvalds will take more than another two weeks to complete.

[ANNOUNCE] linux-staging tree created

,----[ Quote ]
| The linux-staging tree was created to hold drivers and filesystems and
| other semi-major additions to the Linux kernel that are not ready to be
| merged at this point in time.  It is here for companies and authors to
| get a wider range of testing, and to allow for other members of the
| community to help with the development of these features for the
| eventual inclusion into the main kernel tree.
