Microsoft plans to use Windows 7 to raise netbook prices
,----[ Quote ]
| After publicly advertising the idea that Windows PCs are cheaper than Macs in
| its "Laptop Hunter" ads, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told an audience of
| financial analysts that the company's attempts to cut prices of Windows to
| induce demand in emerging markets had failed over the previous year, and that
| the solution to the company's woes will be to increase the price of
| computers.
|
| "The theory was wrong," Ballmer said, explaining that there wasn't enough new
| demand to make up for the drop in profits. "Youâll see us address the theory.
| Weâre going to readjust those prices north [using Windows 7]."

Report: Acer Android Netbook pushed back
,----[ Quote ]
| But if the Digitimes report is accurate, it means something has shifted at
| Acer HQ. At Computex in early June, company executives were very excited
| about the possibilities of Android on Netbooks, even saying that the majority
| of Acer Netbooks will come with Android as an alternative operating system to
| Microsoft's Windows.
|
| "Netbooks are designed to be compact in size and easy to connect to the
| Internet wherever you go," Jim Wong, Acer's president of IT products, said at
| the time. "The Android operating system offers incredibly fast wireless
| connection to the Internet; for this reason, Acer has decided to develop
| Android Netbooks for added convenience to our customers."

MS steps on a Snapdragon
,----[ Quote ]
| That brings us back to the Asus and what was billed as the best
| netbook/smartbook of the show. You have a company that kicked off the netbook
| craze two years ago with the Eee, an OS that is not only MS free, but Linux
| based as well, and a chipmaker that actually delivers product. The buzz was
| growing at Computex, and that would create a PR disaster for MS.
|
| So it went away. No really, it went *POOF* in the middle of the show. No
| explanation, no excuses, just that it was there one day, and gone the next.
| PR disaster averted for Redmond, phew.

| Be sure Microsoft will put up a fight, because it will:
|
| Â Â1. Make clear to the customer what he pays for and how much he pays for
| Â Â Â it;
| Â Â2. Make it virtually impossible to impose its terms to hardware
| Â Â Â Âmanufacturers;
| Â Â3. Give customers a real alternative, backed by a major company;
| Â Â4. Expose the vulnerability of its business model in the 21st century to
| Â Â Â the shareholders in a way that cannot be misunderstood;
| Â Â5. Create a dangerous precedent - if here, why not in the US?
