Ubuntu Linux says bye-bye Windows on netbooks

,----[ Quote ]
| I decided to find out just how tricky it would be to install dual Operating
| Systems in my netbook. My goal was to see if Linux could run along with
| Microsoft Windows XP as the OS du jour in my MSI Wind U123 netbook.

Notes On the HP 2133 Mini-Note

,----[ Quote ]
| Although I have some nine different Linux distributions currently loaded for
| multi-boot on my 2133, Dreamlinux is not one of them, so I am not sure what
| version of the openchrome drivers they are using. As other distributions,
| what I generally recommend, especially for people who intend to use their
| computers for multimedia playing, is Linux Mint. It is derived from the
| latest Ubuntu distribution, so the latest Mint (7, aka Gloria) is derived
| from Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. It has a lot of optional packages and
| codecs preinstalled, so it not only saves a fair amount of time, it may also
| include some things that you didn't even know about - that was certainly the
| case with me, anyway. Out of curiosity, I just booted Mint on my 2133, and
| played a couple of Youtube videos. The quality seemed ok, they were not jerky
| or pixellating. I also played one of the videos on the ZDNet UK web site,
| which is of course flash-based, and it played just fine as well - if anything
| perhaps a bit better than the Youtube video did.

Review: HP Mini 110

,----[ Quote ]
| The $499 version of the Mini 110 weaves its wallet-friendly magic by opting
| for the free Linux operating system instead of Windows XP. HP has done much
| to make Linux a doddle to use, including a customised home screen that looks
| slicker and more professional than anything we've ever seen out of Microsoft.
| You'll also find some bespoke programs, such as a multimedia player that
| resembles Apple's Front Row.

HP announces a new business netbook

,----[ Quote ]
| The Mini 5101 will still weigh about 2.6 pounds, and buyers will have their
| pick of Windows Vista, XP Home or Professional, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11, or
| FreeDOSâif they want to install their own version of Linux.

Irate e-mails reveal HP, Microsoft strife

,----[ Quote ]
| A surprise decision by Microsoft jeopardized its relationship with PC giant
| Hewlett-Packard a year before Windows Vista's release, according to internal
| e-mails unsealed late Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The messages,
| between top Microsoft and HP executives, shed new light on the
| behind-the-scenes turmoil that preceded the operating system's troubled
| debut.
|
| "You have demonstrated a complete lack of commitment to HP as a strategic
| partner and cost us a lot of money in the process," wrote HP executive
| Richard Walker in a January 2006 message to then-Microsoft Windows chief Jim
| Allchin. "Your credibility is severely damaged in my organization."
