Linux GFX and state of drivers

,----[ Quote ]
| Well this thread maybe useful for people who are planning to purchase a
| system for linux use only and which GFX card to choose mainly ATI, NVIDIA or
| Intel.

AMD's RS880 / 785G Gains Open-Source Acceleration

,----[ Quote ]
| Back in March we shared that the open-source ATI driver had gained support
| for the unreleased ATI RS880 IGP. Well, the RS880 ended up being turned into
| the 785G due to some problems on AMD's side, but today this new, much more
| powerful IGP has launched. With that said, another commit made to the
| xf86-video-ati driver today finishes off the support. The RS880 / 785G IGPs
| are now properly recognized and the 2D acceleration support is complete.

NVIDIA Shows Linux Compatible Ray-Tracing Engine

,----[ Quote ]
| Information on the NVIDIA OptiX Application Acceleration Engine is available
| at NVIDIA.com. NVIDIA also lists four ray-tracing engine examples and do
| mention Linux for them, but the links are not currently available. These
| ray-tracing demos will still require Quadro FX hardware and also a NVIDIA
| 190.xx driver release or newer.

AMD Pushes Out New R600/700 3D Code

,----[ Quote ]
| This code will allow open-source 3D acceleration on the Radeon HD 2000, 3000,
| and 4000 series of graphics cards. Those using the Radeon X1000 series (R500)
| or earlier have already had open-source ATI 3D support for a while.

AMD Releases R700 Instruction Set Architecture

,----[ Quote ]
| Back in January there was the release of the R600/700 3D documentation that
| is being used along with some open-source code to begin powering up the
| Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 hardware with OpenGL acceleration support in Mesa.
| Some of this code should be out soon, but this past week AMD has released
| some more NDA-free documentation. This time the documentation concerns the
| R700 Instruction Set Architecture (ISA).

Testing Out The Nouveau Driver On Fedora 11

,----[ Quote ]
| With the forthcoming release of Fedora 11, Red Hat has made the bold (but
| wise) decision of replacing xf86-video-nv as the default open-source NVIDIA
| driver with the Nouveau driver instead. The xf86-video-nv driver is
| officially maintained by NVIDIA, but it's their half-assed attempt at being
| open-source friendly. The X.Org driver's code is obfuscated, its 2D support
| is limited, there is no 3D acceleration at all, and it barely receives new
| features and support these days. Meanwhile, a group of open-source developers
| have been reverse-engineering NVIDIA's binary Linux driver to write the
| Nouveau driver that will offer 2D, 3D, and video acceleration and aims to be
| feature-complete. The Nouveau project has been around for a few years, but
| their code is starting to come to maturation with kernel mode-setting and a
| Gallium3D driver hopefully being stable by year's end.

Open-Source R600 OpenGL Support May Come Soon

,----[ Quote ]
| As AMD is still working on code review and obtaining permission to push out
| different pieces of code, much of the OpenGL work has been going on behind
| the scenes in a private code repository rather than in the open and needing
| to get permission before each commit. AMD's John Bridgman shared this morning
| on the RadeonHD IRC channel that the OpenGL work is not finished yet but "a
| bunch of things work" and he hopes to be able to get the R600/700 Mesa code
| pushed into the public tree over the next week or so.
