Don Becker On The State Of HPC

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux magazine HPC Editor Douglas Eadline had a chance recently to discuss
| the current state of HPC clusters with Beowulf pioneer Don Becker, Founder
| and Chief Technical Officer, Scyld Software (now Part of Penguin Computing).
| For those that may have come to the HPC party late, Don was a co-founder of
| the original Beowulf project, which is the cornerstone for commodity-based
| high-performance cluster computing. Donâs work in parallel and distributed
| computing began in 1983 at MITâs Real Time Systems group. He is known
| throughout the international community of operating system developers for his
| contributions to networking software and as the driving force behind
| beowulf.org.

High-end Clustering Tool Is Reworked for the Enterprise

,----[ Quote ]
| "As the needs of the data center change throughout the day for different
| types of application services, we can actually repurpose resources to
| different operating system characteristics, whether that's from Linux to
| Windows or between versions of Linux with different drivers," he said.

GNU/Linux Tops TOP500 Supercomputers Again

,----[ Quote ]
| The fact that GNU/Linux totally dominates the top 500 supercomputing list is
| hardly news, but the fact that it has managed to *increase* its market share
| yet further is.
|
| Here are the results for June 2009:
|
|
| Â Â GNU/Linux 443 (88.6%)
| Â Â Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Â Â Unix 22 (4.4%)
|
|
| and here are the figures for six months ago:
|
|
| Â Â GNU/Linux 439 (87.8%)
| Â Â Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Â Â Unix 23 (4.6%)

Linux shows staying power on Top500

,----[ Quote ]
| The latest list indicates growing Linux dominance. Linux is used in the top
| nine supercomputer systems in the world. When considered as the primary OS or
| part of a mixed-OS supersystem, Linux is now present in 469 of the
| supercomputer sites, 93.8% of the Top500 list.

Why is Linux THE FASTEST operating system today?

,----[ Quote ]
| Now that I mentioned supercomputers at the time of this writing the worlds
| fastest supercomputer runs Linux. In fact most of them run Linux as you will
| see here in the list of the top 500 supercomputers. Out of all of the
| operating systems on these supercomputers Linux is a whopping 87.8% with
| windows only (giggle) 1% as can be seen here. The current worlds fastest
| supercomputer runs..... Redhat Linux and Fedora. The exact same ones you can
| download and install on your personal computer.
