Linux Monday: Updating the Old Boxes

,----[ Quote ]
| The slowest machine I have up is a Celeron 700 that's running Puppy Linux. It
| seems to be really sturdy, and it's an old-style horizontal (as opposed to
| tower) case that physically fits into an odd nook. It went 57 days without a
| restart until I bumped the power cord. I originally had Damn Small Linux on
| this but Puppy was friendlier to my relative newbie skills.

Ubuntu Saves Compaq Presario 2100 From Death and Windows

,----[ Quote ]
| My brother in law (Ronnie) was ready to throw out his aging Compaq Presario
| 2100 laptop. The system was overwhelmed by viruses, worms and other
| Windows-related problems. Security packages from all the major software
| suppliers (Symantec, McAfee, etc.) failed to clean up the system. Plus, the
| security software only made the Presario run more slowly.
|
| Frustrated, Ronnie purchased a Dell laptop to replace the Presario â and he
| was ready to throw the Presario away. Thatâs when I stepped in, asked to
| borrow the system, and loaded Ubuntu 8.04. The entire install took
| approximately 30 minutes. And as you know, Iâm not just talking about the
| operating system. OpenOffice, FireFox and all the other open source bonuses
| also landed on the laptop as part of the Ubuntu install.

Can Ubuntu Linux Close the Digital Divide?

,----[ Quote ]
| Sure, Ubuntu Linux holds great promise as a tool that helps to shrink the
| digital divide. Netbooks (low-cost subnotebooks) with Ubuntu Remix are
| expected to flood the market this winter. And Intel continues to press
| forward with its Classmate PCs â low-cost systems that target K-6 schools in
| the U.S. and K-12 in emerging markets. Now comes word of Untangle leading the
| Installfest at LinuxWorld Expo.
|
| [...]
|
| Meanwhile, K-12 school kids in Vermont and neighboring states were sharing
| dial-up connections in computer labs. And recent high school graduates were
| heading off to college and never returning home. Instead, they were
| relocating â permanently â to towns that had broadband.

New Life for an Old PC

,----[ Quote ]
| If you and your friend do not want to spend a lot of money, putting the Linux
| operating system on the old PC is a much less expensive option. Many versions
| of Linux have a graphical point-and-click interface these days, but they
| still may have a learning curve for new users.
|
| [...]
|
| Putting Linux on the old computer means you wonât be able to run Windows
| programs without some technical know-how and software like WINE (winehq.org).
| But if your friend just wants to use your old computer for basic tasks like
| e-mail, Web browsing and word processing, Linux is quite capable. Ubuntu
| Desktop Linux even comes with the OpenOffice word-processing, spreadsheet and
| presentation software, the Firefox Web browser, a calendar and an e-mail
| program â the free equivalents of Microsoft software like the Office programs
| and Internet Explorer.

Life after cyber-death

,----[ Quote ]
| But thanks to improvements in desktop versions of Linux, we can now do
| something better.
|
| Apart from being able to run easily on clunky old machines, the great thing
| about Linux is the way thousands of the worldâs most professional programmers
| have volunteered their spare time to improving the breedâwith nothing to gain
| save personal satisfaction and the respect of their peers. Thanks to their
| efforts, thereâs recently been a flood of slick desktop versions of the
| rugged open-source operating system. Â Â

Stop! Don't trash those old PCs

,----[ Quote ]
| Interestingly enough, there is another operating system that most people are
| not familiar with called Linux. Linux (and its earlier version UNIX) have
| been around for a long time helping us place phones calls and providing
| access to the Internet. Linux, up until this point, has been mostly behind
| the scenes just doing its job and doing it well. You can get started with
| Linux at www.linux.org. Ã ÂÃ Â
