Mission Accomplished
,----[ Quote ]
| Most of you know what this is all about...some won't. Brian Henry, Tech Guru
| at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg Indiana contacted me a while
| back and said that he wanted to support The HeliOS Project. He stated that
| the various computer labs were being refreshed and that he wanted to donate
| the decommissioned computers to us. He explained that about half the machines
| were Pentium 4's and the other half was comprised of Xeon Desktop units. He
| wanted to know if we would be interested in these machines. And by the
| way...there were about 30 LCD flat screen monitors included.

Linux Newbie, You Have Options.

| Don't be turned off by the fanboys, fanatics and others who want to sway your
| mind into their respective camps--just ignore them, laugh at them and enjoy
| your awesome new computer.
| As you learn more about Linux, you might find that Ubuntu doesn't work for
| you as well as another distribution--so be it. Choose another. Change monthly
| if you want.

A Day of Discovery
,----[ Quote ]
| The HeliOS Project works toward a noble cause, but it is not self sufficient.
| It relies upon the compassion, dedication and willing sacrifice of others.
|
| Not exactly an easy thing to lay hands upon these days...unless you are in
| Austin Texas.

Linux Against Poverty: putting old computers to good use
,----[ Quote ]
| Weâve written about Ken Starks in this space before and the admirable work he
| does for the HeliOS Project.
|
| Itâs one of those amazing Austin organizations that puts a lump in my throat
| every time I write about it. Ken and his volunteers take computers that would
| otherwise go into landfills or get donated to Goodwill, get them operational
| and donate them to needy kids, families and non-profits that are happy to
| have functioning desktop and laptop computers.
|
| One thing I still hear a lot at this late date is why techies arenât spending
| less time Twittering and more time doing things for their community. Well,
| Austin, itâs time to put up or shut up. This Saturday, you have an
| opportunity to get computers in the hands of those who need them most. Starks
| hooked up with networking guru Lynn Bender of GeekAustin and they have
| organized Linux Against Poverty.

| So, start the schools using OpenSource software and Linux. The students will

Linux Against Poverty - It is a GO
,----[ Quote ]
| Quoting Helen Keller in a Linux blog may seem strange, but there are many
| parallels between this magnificent woman and Free Software/Linux. We both
| started way behind the competition with handicaps and hindrances that made it
| almost laughable that we would compete.
|
| First they Ignore you
| Then they laugh at you
| Then they fight you
| Then you win...
|
| Of course you can only win if you compete.
|
| Common sense. And not being afraid.

How Linux Can Help Reduce Poverty
,----[ Quote ]
| Poverty is a global problem, which is not limited to third world developing
| countries. Even mature developed nations like United States has ~18% poverty
| rate. There are many reasons and causes of poverty, which includes but not
| limited to, natural disasters, war, disease, politics, religion, and
| over-population and so on and so forth. Some of these causes are beyond our
| control while others are beyond our means. There is no single factor that can
| totally eliminate poverty, even the almighty latest Linux Kernel release; but
| many ideas and anti-poverty initiative can come together to reduce the causes
| of poverty.
