Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground stream new unreleased album

,----[ Quote ]
| While many bands are left struggling to connect with fans and giving them a
| reason to buy (CwF + RtB), acts like HEALTH are giving away âprizesâ and
| Radiohead are leaking its own songs. We can now add Kay Kay and His Weathered
| Underground into the fray as well.

When The Marketing Overshadows The Music

,----[ Quote ]
| To gain attention for his new album, Moldover created some unique packaging
| that turns the CD cover into a playable electronic instrument.

The end of free lyrics?

,----[ Quote ]
| And then along comes LyricWiki, a terrific resource for grabbing lyrics
| without the ads and dead-ends. Just type a song title, artist, or album into
| LyricWikiâs Search field and a list of Google hits appears on a subsequent
| page. Click an appropriate link and the lyrics appear without the advertising
| cruft. Better yet, thanks to the LyricWiki API, programmers could create
| desktop and mobile applications that retrieved lyrics from LyricWiki without
| the need for a Web browser.
|
| At least it did. According to a post by LyricWikiâs creator, Sean Colombo,
| the major publishers demanded that programmatic access to LyricWikiâs
| collection of lyrics be shut off. Rather than face the wrath of those
| publishers, Colombo complied with the request.

Yahoo wins U.S. court ruling over webcasting fees

| A federal appeals court in New York ruled that a Yahoo Inc Internet radio
| service is not required to pay fees to copyright holders of songs it plays, a
| defeat for Sony Corp's BMG Music.

The Quiet Digital Audio Revolution

,----[ Quote ]
| While commercially-recorded audio from the traditional big-name music
| companies is on a downhill slide in both technical and artistic quality, it's
| never been better for the do-it-yourselfer, the serious hobbyist, and
| independent artist. All this hooey about Linux needing to be more "business
| friendly"-- why should we even care? Look at what business has done for us:
| the RIAA, BSA, DMCA, insane copyright extensions, "intellectual property",
| patents, the near-death of Fair Use, corporate spyware, unchecked privacy
| invasions, a complete abdication of responsibility, a barren computing
| marketplace...who needs friends like that?
|
| OK that's a bit of a tangent, sorry, just my usual blend of mixed feelings
| coming out: immense sadness at the overall sorry state of affairs, and
| immense gratitude that we have such a strong lifeline in Linux and FOSS.

Recent:

A Band That Knows Where the Money Comes From

,----[ Quote ]
| Chester French isnât your typical rock band. Singer D.A. Wallach and
| multi-instrumentalist Max Drummey met as freshmen at Harvard, where lanky,
| longhaired Drummey majored in social anthropology and twee, preppy Wallach
| graduated as the top student in the schoolâs African-American Studies
| program. In the video for their best-known song, âShe Loves Everybody,â a
| pretty girl punches the stuffing out of the two helpless weaklings, leaving
| them bloody-nosed among their broken guitars and drums.
|
| [....]
|
| Instead of giving interviews to reporters or dropping by radio stations,
| Wallach spends most of his time online, going through an average 100 to 200
| e-mail messages a day. âWe respond to every single e-mail we get,â he
| said. âI do an hour in the morning and an hour at night.

Should You Really Need a License to Run a Video Arcade?

,----[ Quote ]
| In light of these concerns, I fail to see why Amherst or any other city
| should be in the business of licensing video arcades. And even if they are
| doing so for tax purposes, they shouldnât be using that power to censor
| arcade games or shutting down businesses that offer such games.

What A Job: Making Sure No Brands Appear In A Movie

,----[ Quote ]
| What a stupendous waste of time, money and resources. But it shows what a
| ridiculous society we've created, where intellectual property law means that
| you can't have a McDonald's appear anywhere in the background in a movie. I'm
| sure that's exactly what our founding fathers were concerned about when they
| put in place the constitutional clause about "promoting the progress."

RIAA Brief Attacks Free Software Foundation

,----[ Quote ]
| In their proposed response, the RIAA lawyers personally attacked The Free
| Software Foundation, Ray Beckerman (NewYorkCountryLawyer), and NYCL's
| blog, 'Recording Industry vs. The People'. The 9-page response (PDF) â 4
| pages longer than the document to which it was responding â termed the FSF an
| organization 'dedicated to eliminating restrictions on copying,
| redistribution, and modifying computer programs', and accused the FSF of
| having an 'open and virulent bias against copyrights' and 'blatant bias'
| against the record companies.

RIAA publicly humiliates judge Nancy Gertner

,----[ Quote ]
| Hired RIAA attack lawyers Timothy Reynolds (Holme Roberts & Owen) and Daniel
| Cloherty Â(Dwyer & Collora) apparently think itâs perfectly acceptable to
| tell a judge to take a hike.

Joe Biden promises a blank check to the entertainment cartel

,----[ Quote ]
| VP Joe Biden stood up in front of a bunch of Hollywood execs and promised to
| appoint a copyright czar, and furthermore, that this would be the "right"
| person to protect their interests. I would have voted Dem in the last
| election, if I got a vote, but make no mistakes: the Dems are the party of
| stupid copyright laws.

Administration Lobbyist Ban Not Doing What It's Supposed To Do

,----[ Quote ]
| We've already seen how the Justice Department is, for example, being filled
| with lawyers who regularly worked with the RIAA, MPAA and BSA -- three of the
| biggest copyright lobbying organizations, and those individuals have wasted
| no time in expressing their desire to continue pushing those industry's
| viewpoints in their new positions.

Copyright debate heats up over Obama appointments

,----[ Quote ]
| The president has, in fact, filled out some high-level Justice Department
| positions with lawyers favored by the copyright industry, including attorneys
| who have represented the Recording Industry Association of America and the
| Business Software Alliance. The signatories of the April 2 letter said the
| Justice Department's intervention last month in favor of a record label in a
| file-sharing case heightens their concern.

Biden promises 'right person' as new U.S. copyright czar

,----[ Quote ]
| "It's pure theft, stolen from the artists and quite frankly from the American
| people as consequence of loss of jobs and as a consequence of loss of
| income," Biden said, according to a White House pool report.

Obama Taps 5th RIAA Lawyer to Justice Dept.

,----[ Quote ]
| President Barack Obama is tapping another RIAA attorney into the Justice
| Department.
|
| Monday's naming of Ian Gershengorn, to become the department's deputy
| assistant attorney of the Civil Division, comes more than a week after nearly
| two-dozen public interest groups, trade pacts and library coalitions urged
| the new president to quit filling his administration with lawyers plucked
| from the Recording Industry Association of America.
|
| The move makes it five RIAA lawyers Obama has appointed to the Justice
| Department.

| The Obama administration has sided with the recording industry in a copyright
| lawsuit against an alleged peer-to-peer pirate, a move that echoes arguments
| previously made by the Bush administration.

Obama Administration Claims Copyright Treaty Involves State Secrets?!?

,----[ Quote ]
| When the Obama administration took over, there was a public stance that this
| administration was going to be more transparent -- especially with regards to
| things like Freedom of Information Act requests. The nonprofit group
| Knowledge Ecology International took that to heart and filed an FOIA request
| to get more info on ACTA. The US Trade Representative's Office responded
| denying the request, saying that the information was "classified in the
| interest of national security pursuant to Executive Order 12958." This is a
| treaty about changing copyright law, not sending missiles somewhere. To claim
| that it's a national security matter is just downright scary. As KEI points
| out, the text of the documents requested have been available to tons of
| people, including more than 30 governments around the world and lobbyists
| from the entertainment industry, pharma industry and publishing industry.

Obama names Doerr, Phillips to economic board

,----[ Quote ]
| Two Silicon Valley leaders have been appointed by President Obama to a
| 16-person committee that's charged with offering economic advice during what
| has become an unusually sharp and deep recession.
|
| John Doerr, the billionaire venture capitalist at Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield
| & Byers, is one. Doerr was involved in funding companies including Google,
| Amazon.com, Sun Microsystems, and Cypress Semiconductor; he currently serves
| on the board of companies including Amazon and Google and has recently turned
| his attention to green tech.
|
| Charles Phillips, the president of Oracle, is another. Phillips became
| president in May 2003 and previously was with Morgan Stanley's Institutional
| Securities Division. He's a Linux aficionado and said in 2005: "On demand is
| the future of software for many years to come and we are building it on
| Linux."
