7 Reasons to Avoid Windows 7

,----[ Quote ]
| Itâs Still Windows
| Despite delivering an intuitive, modern interface in Windows 7, this OS is
| still Windows. In our first look at Windows 7, we complained about the OSâs
| inability to recognize an Adobe AIR file followed by its failure to search
| for software to run the file.
|
| Also, Windows 7 doesnât immediately know what to do with some pretty obvious
| tasks. When you insert a thumb drive, for example, you must tell Windows 7
| what to do with it (i.e. open the folder and view the files) and customize a
| setting to get the OS to automatically behave that way. In short, when
| getting started youâll have to do a lot of tweaking and customizing to get
| moving smoothly. Thatâs unfortunately an experience all Windows users are
| accustomed to â things donât âjust work.â

Microsoft comes out fighting over XP mode security fears

,----[ Quote ]
| It's always fun to stand and watch as two big names slug it out, and they
| don't come much bigger than Microsoft. Sophos, it has to be said, is no small
| fry either when it comes to the world of IT Security. So when a Sophos blog
| posting from it's Chief Technology Office, Richard Jacobs, started with the
| playground taunt equivalent of 'I've been kissing your mum' by
| saying "Windows 7's planned XP compatibility mode risks undoing much of the
| progress that Microsoft has made on the security front in the last few years
| and reveals the true colours of the OS giant" you kind of new things would
| get nasty, and quick. Jacobs continued his verbal assault on Microsoft and
| Windows 7 by adding "XP mode reminds us all that security will never be
| Microsoft's first priority. They'll do enough security to ensure that
| security concerns aren't a barrier to sales, but not so much that it gets in
| the way of progress". Ooh, a little below the belt perhaps?

Could Microsoft Go Open Source?

,----[ Quote ]
| Windows 7 will be released soon, and although there is actually lots of
| positive buzz about their latest product (in comparison to a lot of negative
| buzz about Vista), there simply aren't that many new features in 7. I
| maintain the suspicion that the whole Windows Mojave experiment was just a
| ploy by Microsoft to see if they could get away with repackaging and renaming
| Vista with only a few minor improvements. No more improvement than I would
| expect with each subsequent release of Ubuntu. The difference is that Ubuntu
| takes six months to put out a new release, and Microsoft takes at least two
| years.

Why the 'Mojave Experiment' Fails

,----[ Quote ]
| 1. Microsoft treats its customers like they're stupid. I've had this
| complaint for a decade.
|
| [...]
|
| 2. Microsoft embarrasses Mojave participates.
|
| [...]
|
| 3. The marketing campaign blames customers for Vista's problems.
|
| [...]
|
| 4. Microsoft denies there is a real problem.
|
| [...]
|
| 5. Mojave seethes with arrogance.

Dissecting Microsoftâs Mojave Experiment

,----[ Quote ]
| Last night, as I was drifting off to sleep, something stuck me about
| Microsoftâs Mojave Experiment that hadnât clicked when I first watched it.
| Out of the 140/120 participants (the number varies depending on the source)
| that Microsoft say took part in this experiment, we donât actually seem to
| hear from that many. Why?

Unwanted licences boost Vista numbers

,----[ Quote ]
| "From the 30th of June, we have no longer been able to ship a PC with an XP
| licence," said Jane Bradburn, a marketing manager for HP Australia. "However,
| what we have been able to do with Microsoft is ship PCs with a Vista Business
| licence but with XP pre-loaded. That is still the majority of business
| computers we are selling today."
|
| Therefore the Vole's claims for high Vista sales figures are merely so much
| steer manure. The major PC vendors are still preloading Windows XP, but
| Microsoft is counting those XP preloads as Vista sales.

Acer: PC industry 'disappointed' with Vista

,----[ Quote
| Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer to
| openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in the
| Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
|
| Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and
| businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report. Taiwan-based
| Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after HP, Dell and
| Lenovo.
|
| "The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.
