Win7 Deadly Sins

,----[ Quote ]
| Now, as I said it is no surprise that the FSF is engaging in this important
| effort, but what was a bit surprising was some of the reactions to it.
|
| For example, consider Mr. Matt Asayâs column, where he ignores the entire
| message of the site and chooses instead to try to paint the FSF as
| hypocritices for using a CC-No Derivatives license, and then has the
| laughable audacity to call for more code from the FSF â as if the FSF doesnât
| already have a project or two out there - code which he hints is not
| derivable, a truly foolish red herring to wave about.
|
| Mr. Asay has written many critical pieces about the FSF, the GPL, and related
| matters recently â itâs a shame that he continues to pretend to be a
| proponent of Open Source, when it is quite clear he is actually some sort of
| pro-commerical open-core âfauxpen sourceâ evangelist.
|
| This is the same sort of dishonest dismissal we see from non-Open Source
| supporters like Business Week, right down to using the same language (both
| articles deem the effort âsillyâ). In fact, Mr. Asay endorses the juvenille
| ranting of the Download Squadâs article in his own writing â a truly vacuous
| rock to build upon, I should think.

FSF takes on Windows 7

,----[ Quote ]
| The FSF (Free Software Foundation) has never liked proprietary software, but
| for most of its history, it's focused on singing the praises of free
| software, and, with some distaste, its near-twin, open-source software. Not
| anymore. These days, the FSF is spending its time attacking proprietary
| software, like it did today, August 26th, when it went after Windows 7 in its
| new Windows 7 Sins: The case against Microsoft and proprietary software.

FSF Launches Windows7sins tomorrow

,----[ Quote ]
| From the info-member list:
|
| Â Â This Wednesday, August 26 at 11am, the Free Software Foundation will be
| Â Â launching its Windows7sins.org public awareness campaign, drawing
| Â Â attention to the threats posed by the adoption of Microsoft's
| Â Â proprietary operating system. We have a launch event here in Boston on
| Â Â the Boston Commons from noon until 3pm, and we need everyone in the area
| Â Â to come along and help out and join in the ceremony as we conduct a
| Â Â ceremonial trashing of proprietary software.
|
| Â Â **We'll be launching our Windows 7 campaign with pomp and fanfare, with
| Â Â a giant 12 foot trashcan being filled with boxes of proprietary
| Â Â software.**
|
| Â Â The event promises to be lots of fun, and with thousands of people
| Â Â passing through the Boston Commons every day we hope you will help us
| Â Â connect with the public by handing out information and explaining the
| Â Â benefits of free software. There will be camera crews and photographers
| Â Â capturing the event and we will be getting these images up online as
| Â Â soon as possible on the day.
|
| Â Â Let us know you're coming and bring along your friends and work
| Â Â colleagues - mail campaigns@xxxxxxx if you have time to help us set up,
| Â Â or just turn up at the Boston Commons near the entrance to the Public
| Â Â Gardens from noon.
|
| Â Â If you're not in the Boston area, there will be plenty for you to do to
| Â Â help us launch the campaign and get the message out. Stay tuned for
| Â Â upcoming instructions...

Linux vs Windows 7

,----[ Quote ]
| And this is where Linux can make a big difference. There's nothing in Windows
| 7 that Linux can't do, and in most cases, do it better. Our machines are
| quicker and more efficient. Our desktops are more innovative and less static.
| Our apps are more powerful, cheaper and less partisan, and Linux security has
| never been better. But best of all, we have complete control over the future
| of Linux, and it's success or failure at the hands of Windows 7 is in our
| hands.

Seven things Windows 7 can learn from Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| 1. More frequent release cycles. As Iâve already explained, Microsoftâs worst
| enemy has been its very long release cycles. Linux distributors, on the other
| hand, have the opposite problem â too frequent release cycles. But what would
| a consumer be more interested in, an operating system thatâs eight years old
| (Windows XP) or one thatâs updated every year or even six months? Fresh
| product releases means fresh marketing and Microsoft knows this. From Windows
| 7 on itâs bye, bye many-year release cycles and hello two year cycles at the
| most.
