Impressions from the ODF Workshop in Brazil
,----[ Quote ]
| The growing public-sector support for ODF was on display at the 3rd
| International ODF User Workshop, which concluded last week in Brasilia. The
| eventâorganized by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SERPRO
| (Federal Service for Data Processing - Ministry of Finance, Brazil) and
| Caixa EconÃmica Federal, in collaboration with the ODF Allianceâbrought
| together representatives from governments around the world that have
| already made the move to ODF or are actively considering how best to
| utilize an open format to preserve access to documents and records,
| increase software choice, and save some money in the process. The first day
| of the event was held at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
| (Itamaraty Palace) and the second day at CONSEGI, the largest international
| free software and electronic government conference organized by the
| Brazilian Federal Government.

ODF Workshop and CONSEGI 2009
,----[ Quote ]
| After his presentation, the debate was basically done by a group that
| agrees that we need a stronger stance against proprietary technologies and
| the group that believes that we must continue addressing the issue more
| calmly â and we had almost two hours of debate, perhaps the most
| interesting Iâve ever attended.

Danish hospital: "Hassle free use of ODF across competing office suites"
,----[ Quote ]
| The Danish Ãrhus University Hospital in Risskov, a long-time user of
| OpenOffice, says there are no problems at all exchanging ODF-based documents
| with other hospitals using Microsoft's proprietary Office 2003.
|
| The trick is to have Microsoft users install the free Sun Microsystems ODF
| plugin. "Once that is installed, there are no more problems in exchanging
| ODF-based text documents", says Jens Christian Damgaard one of the hospital's
| IT administrators.

OOXML as a response
,----[ Quote ]
| James D. Mason says:
|
| I spent 22 years as the chairman of what is now ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34. SC34
| is the committee that standardized SGML in the 1980s and now is
| responsible for both ODF, supported by many open-source products, and
| OOXML, the XML released by Microsoft in response to ODF. Neither ODF nor
| OOXML has anything to do with ODA/ODIF, which have been dormant since the
| turn of the current century but were still under development in the 1990s
| in a committee that was parallel to the one that became SC34.
|
| Our past analysis: OOXML is a response. Thank you very much for the
| confirmation. Stronger language from Mason found in this article
