Trolls demanding tolls

,----[ Quote ]
| The market is still small but it is growing quicklyâby perhaps
| 20-30% a year, reckons Coller Capital, an investment firm that
| has snapped up, among other prizes, IBMâs portfolio of medical-
| device and health-care patents. Intellectual Ventures, based
| near Seattle, has spent a large chunk of the $5 billion it has
| raised from investors on buying patents; at the last count it
| had 27,000. Fortress, a big hedge-fund and private-equity
| group, is also active. Ron Epstein of iPotential, a patent-
| brokerage firm, says he is getting an ever-increasing volume of
| calls from hedge funds looking for patents related to mobile
| telecoms, medical equipment, biotechnology and the internet. He
| estimates that $4 billion-worth were bought and sold last year
| overall.

An Appeal to the New Patent Office Director: Repeal the Single Sentence Rule

,----[ Quote ]
| The consequence of the USPTOâs âsingle sentence ruleâ requires
| the patent drafter to cram several paragraphs of description
| into a single sentence. The rule forces claim drafters to
| convert otherwise sensible sentences into multiple clauses
| beginning âwherein,â such as: âwherein the stringed instrument
| includes a vibrato bridge movable to vary the tension of each
| of said one or more strings wherein each of said one or more
| strings is connected at one end to the actuating means and
| wherein the actuating means is carried by the vibrato bridge.â3
| In a patent attorneyâs hands, the above clause contains
| reasonable usage. In the hands of any other person, that clause
| âpart of the lengthier entirety of the claimâjustifiably drives
| them apoplectic.

| After years of confidential work, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the
| Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII) today announce a
| radical way to improve software patent quality: Binaries-As-Prior-Art, or
