Saigon Software Freedom Day a Success!!!

,----[ Quote ]
| Today I attended the Saigon Software Freedom Day 2009
| organized by the Saigon Linux User Group at the University
| of Education in District 5. This is actually my first ever
| SFD that I attended. It was nice to meet Prof. Nguyen Thai
| Son again, a long time advocate of open source and Linux in
| Saigon. I made many valuable contacts from this event today
| including the Ubuntu-VN team.

How do you like your freedom?

,----[ Quote ]
| So really Software Freedom Day is not so much about software
| but about our rights and how they apply to technology. At
| least that's my two cent take on these matters. Go on, throw
| in your own two cents. I dare you!

| Now besides the âfreedomâ it represents, how does using a
| FOSS product benefit a common user? For starters, everything
| is zero cost. Every possible application that you can think
| of comes bundled with GNU/Linux OS and can be installed by
| clicking on the âadd or removeâ function. So, no chasing
| different vendors to buy different applications. And given
| that FOSS is user-centric and mostly a community project,
| applications here are often the most superior and
| interoperable ones on offer.

City wants software freedom for all

| This year September 19, is software freedom day (SFD), a global
| celebration of free and open source software.
|
| There are three types of software, you can buy and use it, you can
| download and use for free and the third is where you could dowload
| it, modify the code and upload it for others to use.
|
| [...]
|
| Announcing programs for SFD, Lokayat on Friday issued a roadmap
| for countering monopoly of big companies.
|
| They will mark this day by not using softwares like Windows, Adobe
| Photoshop etc. Rishikesh Yewalekar, Neeraj Jain and Vaibhav Gupta
| of the organisation said, âSFD is a worldwide celebration of Free
| and Open Source Software (FOSS). The goal is to educate the
| public about ethical reasons and benefits of using high quality
| FOSS.

Welcome to Freedom Movement

,----[ Quote ]
| For those uninitiated to this concept -- a full-fledged
| philosophy for many -- applying something as lofty as freedom
| to the world of bits and bytes may seem a tad misplaced.
| However, advocates of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) will
| tell you that âfreedomâ is as critical in the digital world,
| especially in one that is largely controlled by proprietary
| (and market) forces.
|
| Richard Stallman, the foremost torchbearer of the Free Software
| Movement, points out âFreeâ is a matter of liberty, not price:
| ââFreeâ as in âfree speech,â not as in âfree beerâ,â he
| distinguishes. In simple terms, the user is free to run, copy,
| modify and distribute software, and this, enabled by the fact
| that its source code (a set of instructions that calls the
| shots) is freely available.

Saturday is 'Software Freedom Day' at Morris County library

,----[ Quote ]
| MG: Don't you have to be an engineer to configure "open
| source" programs, apps and modules?
|
| Bob Murphy: No. Linux, and Ubuntu in particular have
| gotten much easier to install. For many systems, it is
| as easy to install as Windows is, if you were to install
| it yourself. You can of course buy computers from
| vendors like system76 and Dell with Linux installed, if
| you prefer not to get your hands dirty.
|
| Applications like OpenOffice and GIMP are as easy as
| clicking on an icon, are typically included in Linux,
| and on Windows, it's a matter of clicking an icon, and
| installing like any other software.
