Bugs and Fixes: File-Sharing Vulnerability Hits Vista
,----[ Quote ]
| Windows Vista users (and IT folks taking care of Server
| 2008 computers) should watch out for a new security hole
| involving Windows file sharing. A remote attacker could
| assume full control of a vulnerable computer by exploiting
| a flaw in the SMB protocol for Windows file and printer
| sharing. Most home users should already have a firewall in
| place that blocks attempts to reach the ports that SMB uses
| (139 and 445). Microsoft may have a patch available by the
| time you read this, but as of this writing no fix was yet
| available. For more details, see Microsoft's security
| advisory.

Is Microsoft about to backtrack on âVista for allâ
,----[ Quote ]
| Forcing companies to buy âpre-downgradedâ PCs is a nonsense. And it doesnât
| take account of consumers, particularly those who buy low-priced machines
| that arenât capable of running Vista with the new aero interface (which has,
| all along, been one of the main hooks for consumers to switch to the
| software.)
|
| Another source hints that there may well be a stay of execution for XP before
| the month is out, though one that is very limited in nature.

Is Vista Still a Flop With IT?
,----[ Quote ]
| "A year of overwhelmingly bad publicity, coupled with opportunities for
| continued XP 'downgrades' or potentially skipping over Vista for Windows 7,
| look to have meaningfully eroded support for Vista and are likely to impair
| the product's overall adoption," the Seattle Post-Intelligencer quoted the
| report as stating.

Vista security credentials tarnished in malware survey
,----[ Quote ]
| "[Vista]has been hailed by Microsoft as the most secure version of Windows to
| date. However, recent research conducted with statistics from over 1.4
| million computers within the ThreatFire community has shown that Windows
| Vista is more susceptible to malware than the eight year old Windows 2000
| operating system, and only 37 per cent more secure than Windows XP," said
| Simon Clausen, chief exec at PC Tools.
