Windows Does Not Scale

,----[ Quote ]
| Certainly not GNU/Linux: the latest Top500
| supercomputer rankings show that the
| GNU/Linux family has 88.60%. Windows? Glad
| you asked: 1%.
|
| So, forget about whether there will ever be a
| Year of the GNU/Linux Desktop: the future is
| about massive data-crunchers, and there
| GNU/Linux already reigns supreme, and has
| done for years. It's Windows that's got
| problems....

"I'd put the Linux phenomenon really as threat No. 1."

Supercomputers love Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Everybody knows Linux as an open-source operating
| system - available today for many different
| hardware architectures - which has become the de
| facto alternative to the Redmondâs product,
| especially in the servers segment. Linux versus
| Windows, Windows versus Linux: this diatribe on
| which of the two is the best solution has been
| literally filling most of the computer forums and
| computer magazines. We are not going to add some
| fire on that already âhotâ discussion, but rather
| analyze some real facts and take the appropriate
| conclusions.

| The operating system family share rank is as

| Operating system Family Count Share
| %
| Linux 443 88.60 %
| Windows 5 1.00 %
| Unix 22 4.40 %
| BSD based 1 0.20 %
| Mixed 29 5.80 %
| Totals 500 100.00 %

GNU/Linux Tops TOP500 Supercomputers Again

,----[ Quote ]
| The fact that GNU/Linux totally dominates the top 500 supercomputing list is
| hardly news, but the fact that it has managed to *increase* its market share
| yet further is.
|
| Here are the results for June 2009:
|
|
| GNU/Linux 443 (88.6%)
| Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Unix 22 (4.4%)
|
|
| and here are the figures for six months ago:
|
|
| GNU/Linux 439 (87.8%)
| Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Unix 23 (4.6%)

Linux shows staying power on Top500

,----[ Quote ]
| The latest list indicates growing Linux dominance. Linux is used in the top
| nine supercomputer systems in the world. When considered as the primary OS or
| part of a mixed-OS supersystem, Linux is now present in 469 of the
| supercomputer sites, 93.8% of the Top500 list.

Why is Linux THE FASTEST operating system today?

,----[ Quote ]
| Now that I mentioned supercomputers at the time of this writing the worlds
| fastest supercomputer runs Linux. In fact most of them run Linux as you will
| see here in the list of the top 500 supercomputers. Out of all of the
| operating systems on these supercomputers Linux is a whopping 87.8% with
| windows only (giggle) 1% as can be seen here. The current worlds fastest
| supercomputer runs..... Redhat Linux and Fedora. The exact same ones you can
| download and install on your personal computer.
