European Commission's Expert Group recommends OA for FP-funded research

,----[ Quote ]
| In early 2008, the European Commission
| assembled an Expert Group of 13 academics
| to rethink how the EU funds research and,
| in particular, "to undertake an evidence-
| based, ex-post evaluation of FP6." As
| group chairman, it appointed Ernst Th.
| Rietschel, President of the Leibniz
| Association and Professor Emeritus at the
| University of LÃbeck.

A chat with Stephen Downes on OER

,----[ Quote ]
| A prominent member of the open education
| community, Stephen Downes is a researcher,
| blogger, and big thinker in open education
| and access related issues. He frequently
| debates with other open education
| advocates via the medium of the Internet,
| once in a while meeting up in person at
| conferences to hash out more of the same.
| I thought I might capture his slice of
| insight into the future of open
| educational resources and how he views
| them evolving in an ideal world.

Welcome to the SPARC Open Access Newsletter, issue #138

,----[ Quote ]
| I want to celebrate the progress of OA journals and the launch
| of the OASPA by setting out what I see as the 10 greatest
| challenges facing OA journals. I want to do this without
| pretending to set the association agenda and without
| presupposing that association members don't already know these
| challenges very well. I'm not a member of the association or
| even a publisher. I merely want to see OA journals succeed.

Better world: Share things

,----[ Quote ]
| Looking for a romantic way to do your bit for the
| planet? Then move in with your lover, take baths
| together and snuggle up on the sofa to watch TV
| together.
|
| An awful lot of energy could be saved if only people
| shared things more, especially their homes. The evidence
| comes from the opposite end of the love spectrum.
| According to a recent study, if all the couples who
| divorced in the US had stayed together, in 2005 alone
| they would have used 2373 billion litres less water and
| 73 billion kilowatt-hours less electricity. Each
| divorced person spent 46 per cent more on electricity
| and 56 per cent more on water.

At End of Act II: Are we Played for Fools OR Building a Enlightened Digital World?

,----[ Quote ]
| This would be the World Wide Web of Books that we have
| been dreaming of rather than a Monopoly of Books.
| Google has helped build momentumâ lets take it the rest
| of the way without blowing it. This could be done by
| Congress or the Justice Departmentâ both of which are
| working on this right now.

The Open PhD â What a Concept

,----[ Quote ]
| Did you know MIT has 1800+ courses available for your
| viewing pleasure? You can even download the syllabus
| and assignments (with answers). Some courses even
| provide copies of old exams. How could I have missed
| this? Itâs not just MIT â other schools belong to the
| consortium â Carnegie Mellon, Standford, Oxford, Yale,
| the list keeps going.
