No open-source Skype ... yet
,----[ Quote ]
| The basis for this? Some correspondence
| between Skype technical support and a
| Mandriva Linux user (Skype supports
| generally older versions of Debian, Fedora,
| openSUSE, and Ubuntu). In it, the French-
| speaking Skype technical support rep said
| that it's possible that the final version
| of Skype for Linux will be open source.
|
| That wasn't much, but it did hint that it
| might be possible that Skype was going to
| at least make its Linux client open-source.
| I decided it was worth my time to look
| further.
|
| I gave Skype a call in Luxembourg. A Skype
| public relations spokesperson quickly
| replied: "We appreciate our user
| community's enthusiasm and realize this is
| something they have been wanting for a
| while. We realize the potential of the
| open-source community and believe that
| making Skype for Linux an open source
| application will help to speed up its
| development and enhance its compatibility
| with different versions of Linux. While it
| is our goal to make Skype for Linux source
| code available to the community in the near
| future, we are not at a point to disclose
| an exact release date yet."

Skype To Provide Open-Source Linux Client
,----[ Quote ]
| There's a new blog post on Skype.com entitled
| Skype open source. It's officially confirmed
| that "an open source version of [the] Linux
| client [is] being developed." This open-source
| client is part of some larger offering that
| supposedly will be coming down the pipe at
| Skype. These efforts will also help them get
| Skype adopted within Linux distributions and
| seeing Skype on other new platforms.

Skype shutdown: where are free software and free protocols?
,----[ Quote ]
| Free software is definitely going strong in some areas, especially in the
| server market. However, there are other areas where free software and free
| protocols have failed. Internet based voice and video communication is one of
| those areas. The market is basically fully owned by Skype, a piece of
| proprietary software based on a proprietary (and abusive) protocol in the
| hands the same company that runs eBay. Free software advocates have been
| saying âwhat if Skype was discontinued?â for years. Then I read about eBay
| considering shutting Skype down. Pardon?

Why eBay Should Open-Source Skype
,----[ Quote ]
| The great thing about opening up Skype is that it wouldn't affect its
| business model, which is already based on giving away the code, albeit in a
| closed form. Money could still be made from the outbound calls from Skype to
| ordinary phone lines. But freeing Skype completely would encourage wider use
| of both it and its protocols as an entire ecosystem grew up around them,
| leading to more users, and more opportunities to sell them subscriptions or
| pay-as-you-go plans. The only thing that eBay would lose are some of its
| problems....
