The difference a few years makes to open source
,----[ Quote ]
| By 2004, when a group of friends and I
| founded the Open Source Business Conference,
| there was significant, growing awareness of
| open source, but its adoption was still
| stymied by Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt,
| much of it fomented by Microsoft (Steve
| Ballmer in 2001: "Linux is a cancer") and
| the SCO Group (lawsuit over the provenance
| of Linux code in 2003).
|
| Today, SCO Group, once a high-flier, is
| struggling for existence. Meanwhile,
| Microsoft has committed another $100,000 to
| Apache Software Foundation, has started its
| own open-source foundation, and has embedded
| significant bits of open-source code within
| its proprietary programs, among other
| things.
|
| Linux, for its part, struggled to get
| noticed in data centers back in 2003. It has
| since become essential, mission-critical
| infrastructure across the Global 2000
| ranking of public companies

StartSSL: a Certification Authority with a heart
,----[ Quote ]
| Linux Security had the chance to talk with
| Eddy Nigg, founder of StartSSL, an
| âalternativeâ CA, by any meaning. Their
| business model is quite different then that
| of other well known CAs, with a pricing
| policy absolutely counter to current trends:
| once a customer verified its identity, any
| number of certificates can be obtained for
| free, payment is only required for those
| steps requiring human intervention (usually
| identification and release of EV
| certificates).

96% of French Public Sector Using Open Source Says New Service
,----[ Quote ]
| According to a French market survey, almost the
| entire public sector (96 %) is using open source. The
| most used applications are database management
| systems and content management systems.
|
| The research firm who carried out the survey
| presented a summary of its report on the use of open
| source in France on 17 September in Paris. The report
| is based on an online survey conducted during the
| summer of 2009 and followed up by interviews with 160
| IT project directors, heads of procurement and other
| IT decision makers, half of which are employed in the
| private sector and the other half representing the
| public sector. Another fifty interviews were held
| with IT vendors.
