What is the Best Distribution of Linux?
,----[ Quote ]
| Linux comes in a wide variety of flavors,
| better known as distributions. Such an
| array can make choosing between them very
| difficult for both the experienced
| administrator as well as the new user
| migrating from a different operating system.
| Making a decision isnât easy, but we will do
| our best to simplify the process of
| selecting the ideal Linux distribution for
| your needs.

Itâs Linuxgiving season: My recent experiences with some Linux distros
,----[ Quote ]
| Fall season is one of the busiest times for
| Linux distributions, and this year is also a
| very busy time for me. Ever since two years
| now I gradually migrated family and friends
| to Linux. This year these new Linux users
| gave me quite some work, especially on week-
| ends, and my own upgrade gave me quite some
| work. You might think that the people I
| installed Linux systems on their laptops
| would be autonomous and relying on forums
| when help were needed. Think again:
| Usability of every day applications may have
| never been easy, but installing new
| applications is something that still has not
| gotten through them, at least on a regular
| basis, and this means they rely on their
| favourite system administrator (me) to fix
| whatever issues they have. But itâs somewhat
| of a vicious circle, because I guess I enjoy
| helping them myself, and to add to the
| pleasure I installed different distributions
| for each of them.

Group test: netbook distros
,----[ Quote ]
| Our choice: EeeXubuntu
|
| [...]
|
| Pupeee very nearly beat it to the top spot: itâs a great, small distro, with
| a lot packed into it. Unfortunately, the WEP problems meant that it just
| slipped below EeeXubuntu in the practical usability stakes. It also lacks the
| range of software that EeeXubuntu has available, even if it can cover the
| basics well. Itâs worth noting that Pupeee can easily be run from a Live USB
| key so you could combine the advantages of both distros; all you need to do
| is mount your regular home directory after youâve booted and saved files
| there. Thereâs scope for saving data between sessions in a special Pupeee
| file and it will automatically pick this file up again the next time you
| boot.
|
| Meanwhile, gOS has far and away the best eye candy of the distros tested
| here, and the online integration is great if youâre certain that youâre going
| to have decent network access. It is, however, a little slow and would need
| streamlining before weâd use it regularly.
|
| Finally, the lack of current packages for Xandros and its dependency on an
| irritating filesystem setup make it the clear loser of the four, although it
| does have an initial functionality edge over EeeXubuntu and gOS.
