Hearst launching Skiff distribution system and Kindle competitor
'by publishers, for publishers,' thinks you'll want it too

,----[ Quote ]
| Despite all the problems with the Kindle --
| poor PDF support, low-contrast screen,
| Orwellian fears -- it makes for a mighty-
| fine reading experience for users. From a
| publisher's perspective it stinks, with
| Amazon reportedly sucking down 70% of a
| sale's proceeds.

How Hollywood plans to keep prices up as movies go online

,----[ Quote ]
| Digital downloads have broken apart the
| album and decimated major label music
| revenues. So movies will also get cheap and
| DRM-free as they increasingly migrate to
| the 'Net, right? Think again.

Spanish Manifesto in Defense of Fundamental Rights on the Internet

,----[ Quote ]
| People are beginning to recognize the
| growing conflict between individual rights
| and "intellectual property"--and, if forced
| to choose, are choosing real, individual
| rights over IP. Hopefully it won't stop
| here.

Major Label Messes With the Wrong Guy

,----[ Quote ]
| Tim Quirk, a senior vice president at the
| digital music service Rhapsody, used to
| front a band that was signed to one of the
| major labels, Warner Bros.
|
| His experiences at Rhapsody taught him
| firsthand that itâs possible to build a big
| database that accounts for what each
| copyright holder is owed. However, he and
| others contend, major labels have no
| incentive to put such a transparent
| database in place â quite the opposite:
| They only stand to benefit by obfuscating
| the accounting process for middle- and
| long-tail bands and tracking their digital
| streams and downloads casually.

Spanish activists issue manifesto on the rights of Internet users

,----[ Quote ]
| Javier "Barrapunto" Candeira writes, "Last
| Monday the Spanish Government sent the
| parliament the latest draft for the Ley de
| Economia Sostenible (Sustainable Economy
| Act), which contained riders modifying the
| current laws on copyright and interactive
| services. These amendments give the Spanish
| Ministy of Culture the administrative power
| to take down websites (or order ISPs to
| block those hosted overseas), all without a
| court order and in the name of
| 'safeguarding Intellectual Property Laws
| against Internet Piracy'.
