How to Troubleshoot and Repair Your PC

,----[ Quote ]
| Diagnosing With Linux
|
| One last bit of advice. Sometimes you might
| suspect that a piece of hardware is defective
| but, you donât have a utility available to
| actually test the device. For example, I had a
| client complaining that the network adapter on an
| HP workstation had gone bad. I replaced the
| motherboard (which had an integrated network
| adapter).
|
| When I got back into Windows I tried to access
| the Internet, but the network adapter still
| wouldnât work. So I reloaded drivers, verified IP
| settings and performed numerous other tests.
| Still, I could not get this PC online. I
| concluded that something inside of Windows was
| causing the problem, and the only thing left to
| do was to reinstall Windows. The client wasnât
| willing to redo a system based on a hunch, so to
| test my hypothesis I booted the system using an
| Ubuntu Live CD.
|
| Ubuntu Live CD is a version of the Linux-based
| Ubuntu operating system that runs completely off
| of a CD without having to install it to the PC.
| This let me boot into a completely different
| operating system on the same PC, without
| modifying the current Windows configuration.

Linux saves the day ... again

| What do you do when Windows will not boot and cannot repair itself from the
| installation CD? You fire up a Linux Live CD!

Use a Live CD to load your operating system

,----[ Quote ]
| Normally Live CDs use the Linux operating system rather than Windows. While
| this may mean having to learn a new way of doing things, the advantage is
| that most of the applications required will already be on the CD.
|
| For instance, if most of what you do is web, email or office tasks, many Live
| CDs come with Firefox, Thunderbird and Openoffice installed, allowing you to
| do all those things.
|
| You will need to download the live CD as a disc (or ISO) image and then
| create it, which is normally simple if you have CD burning software on your
| computer (you will need a blank CD, obviously).

The Disconnect That Could Fail Thousands

,----[ Quote ]
| Knowing that this isn't right, I thumb thru the seventy or so Live CD disks I
| have and grab the one I know that gets this right...but wait. It only trails
| Ubuntu in the Distrowatch lineup by a few hundred hits...what about, oh, I
| don't know...let's try something obscure...let's go down the line a bit.
| Let's see who is well down the list there...It needs to be a debian distro,
| something that doesn't get too much publicity...Oh, let's try this.
|
| DreamLinux.
|
| Upon firing it up and doing an immediate install, imagine my surprise.
|
| Without so much as having to install KdiskFree or any other third party
| disk/file manager, whaddaya know...there are my drives and files. I then
| install KDE since DreamLinux is an Xfce environment by design. Yep, a click
| on the mnt file shows all my drives right there...

Why I love Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| I have Vista and two distros of Linux (Ubuntu, Gentoo) in regular use -- and
| Vista, bless it, brutally murdered its XP predecessor during install, and so
| I had been forced to migrate sooner. And as it happens, the answer as to why
| Vista killed XP all those months ago was answered through this experience.

When in doubt, install Linux...

,----[ Quote ]
| The reason I installed Ubuntu was because I've been doing some reading about
| deployment to servers for Rails apps and have learned that Windows pretty
| much sucks for these purposes. Every solution is a hack of something else. So
| instead of trying to make things work, I'll just use Ubuntu and be able to
| use Capistrano easily to deploy my apps. Good times.
