Widespread Attacks Exploit Newly Patched IE Bug
,----[ Quote ]
| The first widespread attack to leverage a
| recently patched flaw in Microsoft's Internet
| Explorer browser has surfaced.
|
| Starting late Wednesday, researchers at
| antivirus vendor Symantec's Security Response
| group began spotting dozens of Web sites that
| contain the Internet Explorer attack, which
| works reliably on the IE 6 browser, running
| on Windows XP. The attack installs a Trojan
| horse program that is able to bypass some
| security products and then give hackers
| access to the system, said Joshua Talbot, a
| security intelligence manager with Symantec.
|
| Once it has infected a PC, the Trojan sends a
| notification e-mail to the attackers, using a
| U.S.-based, free e-mail service that Symantec
| declined to name.

Stop using Explorer: Govts
,----[ Quote ]
| AUSTRALIAN, French and German internet
| users have been told by their respective
| governments to stop using the Internet
| Explorer (IE) program because of a security
| threat.
|
| According to a report on news.com.au,
| Australian web users were advised to
| install security patches or switch
| browsers. In France and Germany, however,
| warnings have been issued against all
| versions of Microsoft's browser.

Internet Security: more countries join IE warning
,----[ Quote ]
| The governments of France and Australia
| have joined those who are warning that
| Internet Explorer is unsafe in its
| unpatched state. So has New Zealand. But
| the UK, reportedly, has decided not to do
| so. But some of the recommended
| alternatives might cause some users
| frustration.

Mozilla Firefox 3.6 and Its Multiple Personas
,----[ Quote ]
| Customizing and theming, or "skinning",
| your open source browser is about to get
| easier, thanks to the integration of
| Personas in the upcoming Mozilla Firefox
| 3.6 release.
|
| The Personas engine, which enables users to
| easily change the way the browser looks,
| had previously been available as a Firefox
| add-on, but will soon become part of the
| default browser itself. Other popular
| Firefox add-ons, including Weave and Prism
| might one day follow suit, as well as a new
| technology for add-ons called Jetpacks,
| Mozilla said.

Microsoft Should Kill Internet Explorer
,----[ Quote ]
| It's time for Microsoft to kill Internet
| Explorer. It has to be done quickly, before
| it's too late to rebound. The browser is
| bleeding market share in a way that a new
| version alone cannot stop. It's time for the
| company to rethink the browser and come at it
| from a fresh perspective. Microsoft needs a
| new browser, not a new version of an existing
| one.

Attacks Appear Imminent as IE Exploit Is Improved
,----[ Quote ]
| Hackers working on the open-source
| Metasploit project have spiffed up a zero-
| day attack on Microsoft's Internet
| Explorer, making it more reliable -- and
| more likely to be used by criminals.
|
| Security experts have been worried about
| the flaw since it was first disclosed on
| the Bugtraq mailing list Friday. But the
| original demonstration code was unreliable
| and has not been used in real-world
| attacks.

Fixing the Internet Explorer Blues
,----[ Quote ]
| Earlier this week Microsoft announced yet
| another IE (Internet Explorer) bug. This
| one, Microsoft Security Advisory 977981, is
| one of the really bad ones that can allow
| attackers to take your Windows PC over.
| Yuck!
|
| [...]
|
| I think your best move to keep the world
| from sneaking in some malware over your
| browser is to get the latest versions of
| Firefox 3.5.5 or Google's Chrome 3.0.x Web
| browser. Neither is perfect, but they are
| better than IE. I wish I could recommend
| Opera, but I continue to have real concerns
| about Opera's built-in Web server security.

| One thing we have got to change is our strategy -- allowing Office
| documents to be rendered very well by OTHER PEOPLES BROWSERS is one of the
| most destructive things we could do to the company.
|
| We have to stop putting any effort into this and make sure that Office

|
| Anything else is suicide for our platform. This is a case where Office has
