MeeGo code coming in March, will run on Atom boards and N900
,----[ Quote ]
| In an announcement published last week,
| Nokia's Valtteri Halla revealed that Intel
| and Nokia are planning to launch the public
| MeeGo source code repository by the end of
| the month.
|
| The MeeGo project began to take shape last
| month when Intel and Nokia announced plans
| to merge their respective Linux-based
| mobile computing platforms into a single
| open source software project. The unified
| software platform, which consists of
| technology from Maemo and Moblin, will be
| designed for use on a wide range of device
| form factors and will support both ARM and
| x86 architectures.

The Linux Box in My Pocket

| We each found cool stuff to show each other
| over the next 8 hours. âTV timeâ that night
| became âinstall-try-uninstall timeâ. We
| tried out every free Droid app we could get
| out hands on.
|
| My current app list includes:
|
| * a dictionary
|
| * an app with information on every country
|
| * another with info on each of the United
| States
|
| * an app with just about every math and
| physics formula you can imagine
|
| * a copy of the Constitution

| Perfect for Linux developers with deep

MVTec embedded software runs on Nokia mobile phone
,----[ Quote ]
| MVTec claims that tests have proven that
| image-processing applications based on
| HALCON can be successfully built for the
| Nokia N900. Applications are first
| developed with HALCON running on a PC. The
| exported code is then compiled for the
| Nokia N900 to allow the application to run
| on this mobile platform and access the
| full functionality of HALCON.

n900, thoughts

| Open stacks based on Linux, Qt and similar
| tools are in a much better position simply
| because more people and companies can
| participate and therefore create a larger pool
| of shared resources that is hard to impossible
| for a closed platform to match without joining
| in. (Let's not forget that S60 is opening up,
| either, and bringing Qt along with it too.) I
| don't know what the ultimate role Maemo itself
| will play in all of this, but in an open
| ecosystem it doesn't need to be IKotH to be
| successful either, anymore than any of the
| Linux distributions need to be IKotH in the
| server space for server side Linux to
| flourish.

Review: Nokia N900
,----[ Quote ]
| Nokiaâs N900 is not a phone, OK. Well, it is a
| phone, in that it has a SIM slot, and you can
| use it to make voice calls. And it supports
| HSDPA and has a front facing camera so you can
| make video calls. But actually it is more a
| mini computer than a mobile phone.
|
| The N900 runs a new operating system, Maemo 5,
| which is based on Linux and so is open to
| application development by third parties. No,
| Symbian isnât going away, and no, it doesnât
| look as though Nokia will push out a slew of
| Maemo-toting devices during 2010, but yes,
| Nokia does think there is a place for very
| high end, very capable mini computers with
| telephony. And the N900 is its way of showing
| us that.
