Windows 7 SP1 will be brought forward

,----[ Quote ]
| THE RUMOUR MILL claims that Microsoft has
| abandoned its plans to wait nearly two years
| after Windows 7's launch to issue the first
| service pack for its latest operating system.

Things are not Rosy for â7â

,----[ Quote ]
| Reality is not welcome to the salesmen at M$.
| They donât want the public to hear any
| negatives about Vista-recycled. Now they have
| to worry that fewer will migrate from XP to
| â7â or that migrations will be delayed. Poor
| babies. The longer XP hangs around, the more
| will migrate to GNU/Linux because it is an
| actual improvement and itâs faster. The patch
| rate of that other OS is the only thing fast
| about that other OS. Having to install a lot
| of patches on top of a retail licensed OS is
| not what they want a lot of consumers seeing,
| but it is happening.

Pain for Wintel

,----[ Quote ]
| When you manipulate the world into
| using your stuff and you use non-
| standards to do it, you have to eat
| your own dog-food. Intel is choking on
| it. as they move to â7â.
|
| This is a fine example of why we
| should use Free Software and stick to
| open standards. All the IE6isms built
| into the web and LANs lock us forever
| into obsolete technology. Those of us
| who migrated to GNU/Linux years ago
| are laughing. We can upgrade with
| scarcely a concern for widespread
| incompatibilities.

Number 7 your time is up! â Youâve had the taster, now pay the reaperâ

,----[ Quote ]
| So why does it appear that Microsoft is
| âinvestigatingâ now? Remember Vista and âearly
| good reportsâ? It doesnât come a surprise to
| me that people were complaining before now and
| you can see some of the pleaâs for help here.
|
| So remind me again (and in particular if you
| are a Netbook Windows 7 user) once Aero is
| switched off and youâve managed to finally get
| that pesky XP package workingâ.whats the
| advantage here of wanting 7 on a netbook over
| XP when there are reports of bad battery life?
| People often ask if 7 is the version to
| finally replace XPâ.Iâll let you be the judge
| of that.

Windows 7 gives untrustworthy battery stats

,----[ Quote ]
| He said the machine came with Linux and he
| spotted to Windows 7. "Big Mistake," he said.
| "I am not pleased."

Windows 7 â Itâs Vista All Over Again

,----[ Quote ]
| âThere you go againâ. The Gipper said it in
| 1982, and Iâm saying it today â but about
| Windows 7, not Jimmy Carter.
|
| Because the more I play with Windows 7, the
| more I see the Vista debacle unfolding all
| over again. The commonly accepted wisdom is
| that Windows 7 is oh-so-much-better than
| Vista. Well, based on my own extensive
| testing, itâs not. Not at all.
|
| First a bit of history. Back in 2006 I was
| editor-in-chief of PC Magazine. Vista was
| coming out and we were pretty darn
| laudatory. Microsoft provided us with new
| hardware, we tested beta versions of Vista,
| and we loved it. Shortly after it shipped,
| alas, the Wow was less Now than Ow. Vista
| sucked upon release to the world for a wide
| range of reasons â not least because the
| networking and audio driver models were
| completely rebuilt in the six months prior
| to release. That led to driver problems,
| along with general instability. When I left
| PC Magazine in 2007, my parting column was
| a bit of an apology â weâd been too easy on
| what turned out to be one of Microsoftâs
| more uneven efforts.
|
| Itâs easy to get snowed. Microsoft provides
| its favored reviewers a steady stream of
| highlights, new versions, and new features
| â along with brand new hardware to run the
| new builds upon. A team of technical
| marketers inside the borg stand at the
| ready â helping the anointed work through,
| and around, any problems that develop
| during testing.
|
| [...]
|
| Weâve seen this story before. Vista was
| overhyped when it came out by everyone from
| PC Magazine to the Wall Street Journal. And
| now Windows 7 is getting the same treatment.
