Open Source NoSQL Databases Ramp Up

,----[ Quote ]
| For most of the Web era, Relational Database
| Management Systems (RDBMS) based on SQL have
| dominated the database landscape. But over
| the course of the last year, a new approach
| has begun to take hold known as NoSQL,
| offering an alternative to the traditional
| RDBMS.

Digg Moves From MySQL to NoSQL

,----[ Quote ]
| In MySQL's place, Digg is going with an open
| source NoSQL non-relational database called
| Cassandra that was originally created by
| Facebook. As part of the migration effort
| from MySQL to Cassandra, Digg developers
| built a tool to help move data from one
| database to the other. The tool could soon be
| open source, helping other developers make
| the same move.

NoSQL conference coming to Boston

,----[ Quote ]
| On March 11 Boston will join several other
| cities who have host conferences on the
| movement broadly known as NoSQL.
| Cassandra, CouchDB, HBase, HypergraphDB,
| Hypertable, Memcached, MongoDB, Neo4j,
| Riak, SimpleDB, Voldemort, and probably
| other projects as well will be represented
| at the one-day affair.

|
| The resilience of open source
|
| One question that intrigues me is why all
| the offerings in the NoSQL area are open
| source. Some have commercial add-ons, but
| the core technology is provided as free
| software. The few proprietary products and
| services in the market (such as
| Citrusleaf) get far less attention.

Twitter growth prompts switch from MySQL to 'NoSQL' database

,----[ Quote ]
| Ryan King, an engineer at Twitter, today
| told the blog MyNoSQL that the social
| networking company plans to move from
| MySQL to the Cassandra database for what
| he called its resilience, scalability and
| large community of open-source developers.

The lie of the land

,----[ Quote ]
| It's ambitious and time-consuming work to
| produce free maps of the whole of South
| Africa, but that is exactly what the
| OpenStreetMap (OSM) team is doing. Relying
| on a team of volunteers willing to hit the
| highways, streets and tracks of the
| country with their GPSes in their spare
| time, the OpenStreetMap SA team has now
| mapped more than 120,000 km of the
| country's roads. The resulting maps are
| licenced under a Creative Commons licence
| so that anyone can use the information.

How To Organize A Mapping Party

,----[ Quote ]
| We had a mapping party at NIT Calicut
| recently. After the first day of the event I
| shared some ideas to make such mapping
| parties better with GeoHackers team.
|
| [...]
|
| Maps are created at this stage. The data we
| have mined are ordered, analyzed, and
| tagged. We need to make sure that all the
| team follows a naming convention or comment.
| The coordinator should watch for over
| marking / mis-marking of the same location.
| Once the data is properly tagged, it is time
| to upload it to the OSM server.
