The Coffee Party Uses Drupal

,----[ Quote ]
| You can very easily discuss U.S. politics
| over a cup of tea or now, coffee. The much
| popular Sarah Palin 'hand reading'
| capabilities triggered Americans to find an
| alternative to the Tea Party. The
| alternative is the Coffee Party. I can't
| comment much on the goals or agenda's behind
| the two new political 'movements' on the US
| political scene, however, there is some
| indirect connection between the Coffee Party
| and Free Software (Muktware) or Open Source.
| The Coffee Party uses Drupal as their CMS,
| the same CMS which The White House Uses.

5 reasons why your company should be distributed

,----[ Quote ]
| Our company Automattic is distributed, and
| Iâm ready to sing the praises of running a
| business in this way. BTW, I think
| distributed (âevenly spread throughout an
| areaâ) is a better description than the more
| commonly used virtual (ânearly real or
| simulated to be realâ) for a company that
| has people working from all over the place
| instead of a centralized office. In
| Automatticâs case, we currently have over 50
| employees spread across 12 US states and 10
| countries.

Drupal Founder Critical of SaaS and its Proprietary Nature

,----[ Quote ]
| Drupal's founder is calling for open
| source in the enterprise and in the cloud.
| This should be no surprise, coming from
| someone like Dries Buytaert. But it is
| still interesting, considering the source
| and the point he makes about the actual
| lack of open source in cloud computing.
|
| [...]
|
| Dries:
|
| "....they might allow you to export your
| data, but they usually don't allow you to
| export their underlying code. While a lot
| of these services might be built on Open
| Source components, they have a lot more in
| common with proprietary software vendors
| than Open Source projects or companies."
|
| It's in Dries view that this model can be
| disrupted by open source. For example, he
| says, the Drupal Gardens community
| improves the overall platform by
| contributing to it. The goal, as Dries
| says, is for people to export their Drupal
| Garden site in their entirety " the code,
| the theme and data -- and move the
| platform to any Drupal hosting
| environment."

Is SaaS a friend or foe of open source?

,----[ Quote ]
| Even where SaaS companies let customers
| take back their data, they often donât let
| them take the code underlying it, he wrote
| in a blog post. Data without software is
| useless.

Cloud and open source delivers the goods for publishing services provider

,----[ Quote ]
| A Melbourne-based publishing services
| company is using open source and honest-
| to-goodness cloud computing for a custom,
| core business application.

Keep Your Cloud, I'm a Customer Not a Consumer

,----[ Quote ]
| The cloud hype is getting thicker and
| smellier every day. All the cloud
| excitement is coming from those who hope to
| profit from it, the vendors and breathless
| tech journalists who can't think of
| anything worthwhile to write about. They're
| working very hard to make it sound like a
| wonderful thing, a miracle of rare device
| that will transform life as we know it.
|
| In related news, Santa Claus, the Tooth
| Fairy, Sasquatch, Yeti, and Elvis are all
| throwing a fabulous party at Graceland and
| everyone is invited. If you don't live in
| Memphis they'll send a private jet to pick
| you up.
|
| The Cloud is Nonsense
|
| The problem with all this cloud nonsense is
| it's exactly that--nonsense. Hosted
| services are nothing new. What would be new
| and radical and transformative are
| attractive products reasonably-priced, and
| good customer service. Those are the
| missing pieces, and I predict they will
| always be the missing pieces. Because it
| seems that among the big players in tech,
| research and development are devoted
| entirely to inventing new buzzwords. If it
| weren't for the small independents we would
| have nowhere to turn.
