Online Communities Patented; Lawsuit Against Facebook Moves Forward
,----[ Quote ]
| It's always fun to see patent system
| defenders in our comments insist that the
| patent system rarely makes mistakes in
| issuing patents, and how really bad patents
| get pushed out upon review. And yet... then
| we hear stories like the following one.
| Four guys, back in 2001 filed for a patent
| (6,519,629) on a "system for creating a
| community for users with common interests
| to interact in." Seriously. Reading through
| the patent application, I'm having trouble
| seeing how this wasn't covered by a ton of
| prior art. What in that patent does not
| apply to early BBS systems, for example?
| And, even if there really is something new
| (I can't find anything), how is putting
| together an online community not an obvious
| thing?

Facebook Gets Sued Over âCommunityâ Patent
,----[ Quote ]
| Technology patent trolling seems to have
| become a regular pasttime â something that
| is influenced proprtionally with lucrative
| potential of a patent, and which the long-
| flawed approval process at the USPTO (U.S.
| Patent & Trademark Office) abets in the
| first place. Now thereâs another
| questionable patent lawsuit, this one
| involving âonline communitiesâ, and
| naturally, Facebook is a target with its
| community of more than 400 million users.

Competitors may fight Facebook feed patent
,----[ Quote ]
| Earlier this week, Scottish blogger and law
| lecturer Andres Guadamuz accused Facebook
| of aiming to protect "a trivial use of
| databases".
|
| "It seems like the software patent standard
| in the US is so low that all one needs is
| to get a clever patent attorney to attach a
| lot of mumbo jumbo to mundane database
| functions and voila, you are given a
| patent," he wrote.

Looking at Facebook's news feed patent
,----[ Quote ]
| I wonder what is Facebookâs strategy here. They
| could simply be looking to stifle competitors.
| The obvious result of this is that they will
| probably attempt to get licences from some
| prominent social networks and the
| aforementioned open source projects. In the
| longer run, this could be used to become the
| only name in social networking. Not good news
| at all.

Google Secures Broad Patent for Location-Based Advertising
,----[ Quote ]
| That patent itself focuses on making sure
| businesses can better target their ads based on
| location information so that they can do things
| such as price arbitration (e.g. figuring out
| prices for items near you and getting the best
| deal). It also deals with the user interface
| and defining geographic areas.
